David Lynch’s MULHOLLAND DR.: True Horror Is the Pure and Simple Truth

"Come on, it’ll be just like in the movies. We’ll pretend to be someone else." – ‘Betty’

If you haven’t yet seen MULHOLLAND DR., the following piece has ‘spoilers’.

What is the most horrible thing in the world? For an answer, we can concoct all kinds of theories, explanations, speculations, imaginations, and fantasies. But in the end, nothing is more horrible than the pure and simple truth. Perhaps no film conveyed this sense more powerfully than David Lynch’s MULHOLLAND DR. Roughly, the first four-fifths of the film are immersed in a kind of dream-fantasy-haze, and the final one fifth dwells on the reality of what-really-happened. We realize that the fever-dream was spawned within the mind of a failed actress named Diane Selwyn.

The surreal alternative universe of Selwyn’s fantasies ranges in style and mood from comedy to romance to horror to absurdism to ‘art film’. There are some funny bits, especially with the old couple with frozen faces in the limousine and the cocky movie director who finds his wife in bed with another man and later confronts the ‘cowboy’. In some scenes, what begins with a light tone turns unsuspectingly dark and morbid. In others, absurd comic touches intermingle with cruelty and mayhem. Consider the first scene in the diner where some smiley faced guy relates a dream he had last night to his friend. Everything seems normal, and we expect a run-of-the-mill conversation between buddies. But we then hear that the dream turned into a nightmare that ended horribly. More chilling, the teller of the tale begins to suspect that he is in the very dream he’s been talking about. The dream that turns into a nightmare. The mood goes from light and lax to dark and brooding. In another scene, we see another pair of male friends who are scruffy-looking. They are reminiscing about old times and laughing about some ‘accident’. Suddenly, one guy pulls out a gun and shoots the other guy. Kidding turns into killing. But then, the gun misfires and hits a fat woman in another room, and the assassin has to cross the hall into the other room to pacify the fat woman(who thinks something bit her in the ass); the scene is, at once, brutal and comical. And then someone vacuuming the hotel hallway witnesses the struggle and unwittingly becomes drawn into the ‘logic’ of the violence.
Likewise, the story of Betty Elms(the fantasy alter ego of Diane Selwyn) goes from light comedy-drama to romance to dark romance to something approaching suspense and tragedy and finally horror. To be sure, though Betty is Diane’s main alternative character, there is a bit of Diane in everyone in her dream/fantasy. Though ‘Rita’ is based on or ‘inspired’ by Camilla, a real-life person, she has certain attributes that are closer to Diane’s mind-set. And the movie director, Adam Kesher, faces obstacles in the fantasy that echo the problems faced by Diane herself in real life. (Diane was angry that her lesbian or bisexual lover Camilla dumped her for someone else in real life, and Adam Kesher’s wife cheats on him in the fever-dream-fantasy. Diane’s sense of betrayal is projected onto Kesher, and Kesher is made out to be the victim of not only a cheating wife but a grand gangster conspiracy to shut down his movie production UNLESS he casts a woman not of his preference. In the fantasy, Kesher is wronged and helpless, a figure of some sympathy despite his cockiness and smugness. But in reality, Kesher was always a smart and savvy player with an ace up his sleeve, and he usually got what he wanted. He never looked at Diane because she had no talent and was less alluring than Camilla. Also, even though his real-life wife did cheat on him, he got the better of the deal in court. He glibly says, "I got the pool, and she got the pool man. I couldn't believe it. I wanted to buy that judge a Rolls-Royce.") As it turns out, Diane and Camilla once roomed together as aspiring actresses. Apparently, Camilla had the talent and/or the looks to make it in the business whereas Diane didn’t. They were lesbian or bi-sexual lovers, and Diane got awful jealous when Camilla won the affection of the movie director. And Diane became especially mad when Camilla pulled what seemed like a dirty trick on her. Camilla invited Diane to a special party at the mansion of the movie director Adam Kesher: for some reason, his name hasn’t been changed to something else in the fantasy; and his mother named ‘Coco’, though playing a different role in the fantasy, is still named ‘Coco’. Anyway, on the evening of the party, Diane was picked up like a movie star from her apartment in a limousine. She was met by Camilla alongside the stretch of road leading to the house through the woods. It was like a magic moment right out of a movie, as if Camilla still loved her friend most of all as they walked hand-in-hand through an enchanted world. In that moment, their relationship takes on mythic undertones, at least in Diane’s mind — though Camilla surely knows how she is manipulating her friend — , and Diane could almost believe that the star and guest-of-honor of the evening will be none other than herself. But at the party, it soon dawns on everyone who is rich and/or famous that Diane is a untalented bore and merely there as an exhibition of the kind of specimen that is all too common in Hollywood: would-be-starlets from all over America who are foolish enough to think that dreams come true to anyone with a dream. She even becomes the object of pity(shading into contempt) as Coco, the mother of the director pats her hand in cold comfort after hearing Diane’s story of her humble background and frustration as an actress. (In the fantasy, Coco has been ‘recast’ as the kindly and empathetic manager of luxury condominium who exudes goodwill and understanding. As the mother of a famous Hollywood director, Diane obviously hungers for her approval.) Worst of all, it soon becomes obvious to Diane that Camilla may have invited her to make a final break in their relationship and to use her as an object of mockery for all to see. A case of damning with faint friendliness. Not only do we see Camilla kissing another woman on the lips but Adam Kesher, her official lover, announces that they are to be... (married). It’s like a double-betrayal. Camilla has chosen another lesbian lover — one more glamorous — and has chosen to tie the knot with a up-and-coming hotshot movie director. (Kesher seems okay with Camilla’s bisexuality and other lovers. I suppose it’s better for one’s future wife to have lesbian lovers than male lovers. The other woman that Camilla kisses is the one who is forced onto the movie director by some gangster conspiracy in Diane’s fever-dream. Of course, it was Camilla’s decision to be lovers with her, but in Diane’s fantasy, she wants to believe otherwise and thus the scenario is altered. So within the fantasy, the ‘other woman’ is forced as a wedge between the main characters by some gangster conspiracy. And she is called ‘Camilla’, the name of the woman who betrayed Diane. Diane loved Camilla but hated what became of her. So, Camilla is made into ‘Rita’ and the name of ‘Camilla’ is transferred into this ‘other woman’ who becomes the star of the movie-under-production not because anyone wants her but because the dark powers-that-be insist she has to be ‘the one’.) Humiliated and angry, Diane pays off some scruffy assassin to kill Camilla. Riven with anger and bitterness, Diane thought then that she wanted nothing more than sweet revenge. She would get back at Camilla by having her murdered. Furthermore, if Camilla is gone from the world, Diane would no longer have reason to feel jealousy since Camilla would no longer exist.
Camilla and Adam Kesher
And yet, the mind works in strange ways. After she heard got confirmation of the hit, Camilla continues to haunt Diane’s mind. Diane becomes overcome with guilt and remorse. (And yet, Diane is still consumed with hatred since Camilla, if still alive, would be carousing with the Hollywood jet-set and snubbing the likes of Diane. Diane could only hate what became of Camilla, but she’s still in love with the Camilla whom she once knew. Also, as Camilla was beautiful and glamorous with or without stardom, she served as a crutch for Diane. Even if Diane didn’t make it in Hollywood, the mere fact of being best friends and lovers with Camilla would have sufficed in filling her life with some degree of happiness. But a woman like Camilla is bound to be discovered by the industry sooner or later. Also, Camilla is an alpha female or temptress by nature. If alpha males are obsessed with having power for themselves, alpha females are obsessed with being associated with men of power. Both alpha males and alpha females have no deep sense of loyalty to anything but themselves. Alpha males will switch to any side to ‘get what is mine’. That’s why so many of them are turned on by globalism. They can play the globalist game for higher stakes and more profits, and the hell with loyalty to any tribe, culture, or nation that is filled with mostly ‘losers’. And alpha females wanna run into the arms of any man who is the winner. So, French alpha females ran into the arms of victorious Nazi-German soldiers. So, white alpha females run into the arms of victorious Negro athletes. So, alpha Japanese women ran into the arms of victorious beefy American G.I..s after Japan was defeated and occupied. So, white gentile girls will throw themselves at rich Jewish playboys with the meaters. So, Teresa in Sam Peckinpah’s THE WILD BUNCH goes with Mapache the General. Her pity for Angel soon turns into mocking contempt and laughter. Beta females tend to be more loyal. They are like the Hebrewish ‘milk-faced girl’ in SAMSON AND DELILAH who remains loyal above all to her race and culture. She has a communal than individual mind-set. Alphas, both male and female, are crucial in yet also destabilizing to any community. They are crucial since they tend to be more assertive, bolder, daring, energetic, and ambitious. Alpha males make for tough leaders, and alpha females pass down their ‘intense’ genes to their kids. So, a society with lots of alpha males and alpha females have a certain vibrancy and spiritedness. But because alphas tend to be individual-centric and adventurous, they are more likely to ditch their own community for another one IF the other offers more individual wealth, privilege, power, pleasure, glamour, prestige, and etc. It’s like the ‘milk-faced girl’ sticks with the Jews, but Delilah the Philistine hussy will go with any man who can shower her with riches or impress her by killing a lion with his bare hands. Alpha females’ passion for individual privilege, prestige, and pleasure is so powerful that the idea of forsaking their individual desires for the communal/cultural good makes them feel frustrated. It’s like the Charlotte Rampling character in GEORGY GIRL: Classic alpha female, just like Catherine played by Jeanne Moreau in JULES AND JIM. Paradoxically, men hanker for the greatest loyalty from the alpha female or temptress even though the allure of such a woman rests in the very qualities that are dynamic and hyperbolic, therefore most unstable and potentially disloyal. As such women go for power, to win the respect of such women means that the man must have the power. Among beta females, pity turns into affection. Therefore, they are content with dorks who lose. But among alpha females, pity turns into contempt. Therefore, they can never be content with ‘losers’. But if a woman is obsessed with only winners, it means she has no deep sense of loyalty because a male winner today can be the male loser tomorrow. Diane Selwyn isn’t a man, but as a bisexual or lesbian she looks at beautiful alpha women in the way that men do. Though she comes to hate Camilla’s disloyalty to her, it is also true that the very unstable quality of Camilla is what turns her on the most. There’s something about Camilla that says, "I’m a born winner who must seek another born winner", so to be associated with her charisma and beauty is to feel as a winner oneself. And as long as both were aspiring actresses, Diane could believe that she and Camilla were soul-mates. But in truth, it was just a temporary accommodation before Camilla found something better.) After having Camilla killed, Diane finds herself even more in love with her. Through her death, Camilla now belongs to Diane alone, at least in her fantasy. As Camilla is gone from the world, she can only exist as a ghost, a phantom, a figment of imagination. No one can own her as a person in the flesh. Yet, what Diane now possesses of Camilla also haunts her. She can’t get over the fact that she had someone she loved killed. It’s also possible that Diane truly fell in love with Camilla only after the murder. Prior to the murder, it was about lust, possessiveness, jealousy, and anger. After Camilla is dead, a tragic aura hangs over her — like of Gelsomina to Zampano after he discovers she died after he abandoned her in LA STRADA. If Camilla were alive and married to a hotshot director and living high in Hollywood, Diane would likely think of her as a crass, nasty, and arrogant bitch. But as she’s dead, Diane is overcome with guilt, pity, and boundless sympathy. It’s like Princess Diana was just some jetset celebrity while alive but adored and adulated as some goddess, a ‘candle in the wind’, after she died ‘tragically’. Death beautifies. Diane didn’t foresee or ‘forefeel’ such emotions when she hired someone to push the button on Camilla. She thought she would get her revenge, Camilla would fade from her memory, and everything would be just fine. In Woody Allen’s CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, that’s exactly what happens. When the Jewish doctor realizes that he’s going to walk free from the murder of his mistress — killed by his gangster brother — , he’s happy and beaming with confidence. But then, he didn’t really love her. Though he did go through the ‘dark night of the soul’ thing, it was really in response to his fears that the police would eventually come knocking on his door and ask some very tough questions. He wrangles with his conscience out of fear of and in preparation for the possibility of having to face the authorities, the public, and those near-and-dear-to-him. When the dark cloud of anxiety lifts, his conscience is walking on sunshine.
Woody  Allen's CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS: the Victorious Conscienceless Jew.
Though Diane isn’t without such worries herself(detectives want to question her for the murder of Camilla), the difference is she really did love Camilla. And after Camilla is dead, she loves her even more. Though Diane’s dream-mind owns Camilla after her death, the fact is she can no longer have Camilla as Camilla is gone from the world forever. (But then, even if Camilla were alive, Diane couldn’t have her either. Indeed, if Camilla were alive, Diane’s hatred and jealousy would eclipse her love for Camilla. In this sense, one’s burning hatred can sometimes be the greatest proof of one’s love. There are some things and some people that people just hate[like rats and leeches], but there are some things and some people that people hate not because they want to hate but because they love them too much but the love is not reciprocated. It’s like the CARMEN story where the nutty guy hates and kills Carmen because he loves her too much, and he can’t stand a world where she doesn’t love him back.) Nothing is more final than death. When Camilla was alive, Diane couldn’t have her because she ‘lost’ her to the Hollywood elites. Even so, Camilla was in the same world(of the living)that Diane inhabited. After Camilla is dead, Diane can take possession of Camilla’s ‘soul’ as Diane, more than anyone else, has the obsessive need to weave Camilla into an elaborate myth of hope, love, and promises. But then, no matter how many times Diane runs the fantasy in her mind and resurrects Camilla as ‘Rita’, the fact remains that Camilla is gone for good, gone forever. And it was none other than Diane who’d hired someone to have Camilla killed. (As in FLATLINERS, fantasies may be fresh and exciting the first few times around, but they begin to collapse on themselves.)
Though we are apt to see Betty as the alternate of Diane and see ‘Rita’ as the alternate of Camilla, oddly enough both Betty and ‘Rita’ are alternates of Diane and Camilla. Though Betty is physically the same as Diane, her radiance and talent(noticed by Hollywood casting directors) makes her more like the real-life Camilla. Though ‘Rita’ is physically the same as Camilla, her seating in the limousine in the opening scene is a variation of Diane’s situation in a limousine to Kesher’s mansion later in the film. ‘Rita’(suffering from amnesia and unable to remember her real name) has attributes that refer to both Diane and Camilla. Like Diane, ‘Rita’ is being driven to some place in a limousine. But like Camilla, ‘Rita’ is about to be assassinated. And just as she’s ordered to step out of the car, the limousine is demolished by an oncoming collision with a car full of youngsters racing down the road.
Naomi Watts as Diane Selywn
It’s as if Diane cannot accept the fact of what happened. So, her mind blanks out the details of reality and imposes auto-amnesia, in effect cocooning herself from the world and weaving her own silken dreams. Indeed, one of the first images of the film is the subjective view of someone moving toward a bed and laying her head on a pillow. Presumably, it’s Diane going to sleep to plunge into another stupor. In her dream, she, as Betty, is an ideal young woman. So pretty, so nice, so kind, so full of promises. She’s so sunny and cheerful that the whole world seems to be smiling down on her and on her side. The sun seems to exist just to radiate its heavenly rays on her. She’s almost virginal in her purity and goodness. Like Doris Day. Even when she finds her suitcases missing outside the airport, it turns out that a friendly cab driver picked them up and is placing them inside the trunk as if it’s only natural to treat her like royalty descended from heaven itself. It’s as if Los Angeles and Hollywood just can’t wait to greet her, indeed as if they are just as excited about her as she is about them. It’s Los Angeles of her mind where everything rolls out before her like a red carpet. But no matter how bright and blooming a fantasy may be, elements of doubt and doom are always hiding just around the corner. We sense a stirring of it in the dog shit in the idyllic condominium complex. Little by little, Betty’s idealized dream fantasy begins to crack and erode. But then, the cracks are cemented and ‘repaired’ with her imaginative ‘rationalizations’ as to why things are getting a little weirder.
Her mind plays on three narrative threads. A confident and even principled movie director who is hounded by some sinister conspiracy that he must cast a certain woman in his new picture. He is not only pressured by a strange network of ‘gangsters’ but also a victim of marital infidelity who finds his wife in bed with some beefy working class type that is a staple of Hollywood movies. The second narrative thread involves a strange, mysterious, and beautiful woman(who is later known as ‘Rita’) who has lost her memory and has taken shelter at Betty’s place of residence — it is supposedly some fancy condo belonging to Betty’s aunt who has connections in the industry. And the third thread is about Betty’s adventure for fame and fortune in Hollywood. Betty seems so pure and good-hearted, and in the fantasy, she is the very opposite of Camilla who betrayed her friend and reduced her to an object of mockery among the Hollywood glitterati. Betty is brimming with pity and warmth for the disoriented and pitiable ‘Rita’. Indeed, she even leaves before the second audition — her first, for a soap opera, was a smash — to pick up ‘Rita’ to check out an apartment that might be Rita’s. Betty might as well be Cinderella. She would even risk her career out of her concern for Rita. She never reneges on her promises. When Diane is in the world of reality, she wants to escape into fantasy. But as alluring and beautiful as the fantasy is, there’s also forces within the mind that gnaws away like a sewer rat at the fantasy, thus creating a hole/portal back to reality. So, Diane is simultaneously running from and returning to reality. But both reality and fantasy are dead-ends. There’s no bringing back Camilla in the real world. She is gone forever from the real world. No matters how many times Diane awakens afresh from her dream/nightmare, the reality she finds herself in is a world without Camilla. And besides, as an untalented actress, Diane never had a chance to make it in Hollywood and never will.
The advantage of fantasy is one can make up stories as one pleases. But fantasies, however pleasurable and comforting they may be, are just that: fantasies. It’s like the Julie Christie character in Robert Altman’s MCCABE AND MRS. MILLER can lose herself in opiate fantasies, but they are nothing more than pipe dreams.
Fever-dreams aren’t just about happy escapism of make-believe but a fascination with mystery. Though we can make of fantasy as we please, there’s something innately unstable about fantasy that undermines our control, especially when the fantasy happens to serve as dreamland wish-fulfillment. Fantasy is open and free but also uncertain and corrosive since they are open to so many possibilities, each one being as valid as the other. If one fantasizes oneself as great doctor, it’s no more or no less valid than fantasizing oneself as a great lawyer or great athlete or great lover or great mountaineer or great general. But if one can be anything in fantasy, it also implies one is nothing in fantasy. Also, one soon realizes that certain fantasies are more sensible and closer to one’s reality than others. For fantasy to be something more than fantastical, it needs to be an exaggeration or mythologization of one’s real world desires and talents. Anyone can fantasize oneself as Superman or Wonder Woman, but such fantasies are so far-out and ludicrous that they wouldn’t address our emotional desires and anxieties.
If someone has a knack for computers, his fantasy as the next Steve Jobs or Bill Gates is surely more feasible than his fantasy as a heavyweight boxer or jet fighter pilot. If one has some athletic talent, it’s more feasible for him to fantasize himself as a star quarterback or home run hitter than as a Nobel prize winning physicist. Though his actual talent may fall way short of his fantasy desire, certain fantasies carry more ‘logic’ than others. As Diane Selwyn is an actress in Hollywood with a pretty face and some appeal — if not much talent — , it makes more sense for her to fantasize herself as a star actress than the next president of America. Furthermore, though she was ultimately rejected by Camilla, they were lovers for awhile, and therefore, Selwyn has some claim on the fantasy in which she imagines herself to be best friends with ‘Rita’. Selwyn’s fantasy isn’t an out-and-out fantasy of the dungeons-and-dragons variety but a what-if kind of fantasy constructed of rearrangements of peoples and events in actual life. To some degree, all of art and storytelling constitute this kind of fantasy. Playwrights such as Eugene O’Neill and Tennessee Williams molded elements and events of their real lives into dramas. Truman Capote used real-life people and experiences as inspirations for his short stories and novels. In the case of IN COLD BLOOD, though sold as non-fiction, the techniques were borrowed from fiction, therefore it’s not easy to discern where the non-fiction element ends and the fiction element begins. And then what of Richard Brooks’ film where actors play the actual killers with near-documentary precision? (The UVA rape hoax story might be called Mulholland Journalism.)
When fantasy is clearly a fantasy as mere escapism, it’s easily distinguished from reality. No one’s going to confuse the TWILIGHT series with reality... though some parts of the first one and NEW MOON rang true emotionally. Such works call for the suspension of disbelief, and for the duration of reading/watching we believe in the romance as a form of escapism. But what about the kind of fantasy where one isn’t so much trying to escape from reality as enter into a ‘reality’ truer to one’s own heart. That’s the case with Diane Selwyn(and subconsciously with Richard Gere character of MOTHMAN PROPHECIES whose heart is still searching for his wife who died two years ago). Diane isn’t hiding in some idle fantasy totally disconnected from reality. Nor is she, in the manner of an artist like David Mamet or Eugene O’Neill, using what she knows of reality to explore the darker sides of truth. A professional artist may be somewhat strange and eccentric, but he must exert control over his vision. His will must be powerful enough so that, ultimately, he is the master of his visionary demons than vice versa in the Faustian Pact. (When an artist loses such control, the result is like Sam Peckinpah’s BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA that can be appreciated as Peckinpah’s drunken fantasy but not as any kind of successful artistic statement.) In the case of Diane Selwyn, the fantasy gains power over her like a drug/opiate. She surrenders to the fantasy because of her powerful need to believe in a different ‘reality’. She can’t sculpt her fantasy in the manner of an artist because her conscious mind would have to be awakened and made cognizant of the fact that her fantasies are not real. Diane Selywn desperately wants her fantasy to be ‘real’. She doesn’t so much want to mold it as meld into it. And in that respect, it’s more dream than fantasy. Fantasy one can control. Dream one surrenders to and believes while under its spell. This dream totally incapacitates Diane Selywn as she inhales its fumes of sweet decay.
Pink Pillow - Later Adam Kesher becomes smudged in pink paint.
There’s an element of ‘spiritualism’ in any fantasy or dream, a wish to free oneself from the confines of the body/flesh and social environment. In religion, there’s the hope of liberating one’s spirit from the flesh that experiences hardships, ages and withers, feels pain and agony, is violated, may be ugly, may be diseased, or etc. According to Christianity, the souls of true believers will be released from their bodies and shall be united with God. According to Buddhism, those who seek Nirvana will be forever freed from the cycles of life and death that center around pain and suffering. (Both Christianity and Buddhism are anti-nature, therefore anti-life. A perfect Christian should focus all his/her attention on the purity of his/her soul, forsake fleshly desires[including sex], and pray so as to eventually be united with God in Heaven. In THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, Jesus’s greatest temptation isn’t some Grand Evil but the ‘normal life’ or the ‘good life’. It’s easy to see Great Evil for what it is but not so easy to see what’s wrong with the mundane ‘banality’ of life. If Satan were to appear before Jesus and promise Him all the power and wealth in a Faustian bargain, Jesus might be tempted, but He would see the obvious Evil of the nature of the temptation. But what is so ‘evil’ about the normal and mundane life? Indeed, what Jesus is tempted with in Martin Scorsese’s film is something like the life led by most Jews, including Abraham. After all, Abraham led a family life and had wife and children. And according to the Old Testament, he led a good exemplary life. So, if it was good enough for Abraham, why wouldn’t it be good enough for Jesus? Why would it be ‘evil’ in the case of Jesus? It’s because Christianity strives for a higher morality than Judaism does. Judaism is profoundly spiritual, but it’s also tribal, familial, cultural, and racial. It is about US-versus-THEM. It has a strict set of tribal codes and laws that govern what Jews must do and mustn’t do. In contrast, Christianity seeks to transcend all tribal and cultural boundaries. It seeks to be the universal faith of universal truth for all mankind for all time. Since mankind is made up of different races, cultures, languages, customs, and etc., they can only be united on the spiritual level. Therefore, Christianity goes beyond the natural and cultural. And for this reason, Jesus in THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST must even resist the ‘normal good life’ of the Jewish community. If he chooses the life of Abraham, he can be a good Jew, but he cannot be the exemplary savior of All Mankind. Given his special destiny, what might be good for other Jews can only be evil in his case. Also, there’s something about ‘normality’, ‘banality’, and ‘mundaneness’ that blinds people to what may be wrong with the community. After all, different societies/cultures have different social/moral norms. If the norm is conflated as the ‘good’, then one isn’t likely to question the true meaning of good since ‘goodness’ is just whatever everyone else seems to believe in and do. There was a time when society was mindlessly and excessively anti-homosexual because that was thought to be ‘good’. Today, too many people are mindlessly and excessively pro-homosexual because that is the ‘new normal’. Since social ‘norms’ change according to who wields elite power and controls academia/media/government, normo-morality or ‘normorality’ cannot be a foolproof guide as to what is truly right or truly wrong. In Asia, it’s normal to eat cats and dogs, so people are blind to the horrors of such a thing. In the West, it’s normal to eat pigs, so people are blind to the horror of the hogocalypse. Western people bemoan how intelligent cats and dogs are killed in Asia, but they are blind to how they do something similar by slaughtering highly intelligent pigs for bacon and other disgusting[but delicious] pork products. Normality isn’t enough for morality. After all, in New Papua Guinea, children are culturally encouraged to hit dogs and chickens. Papua Guineans not only see nothing wrong with it but see it as a ‘good norm’ for their children. In Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, a lot of people went along with horrible things deemed as the ‘norm’. Today, many Germans go along with the mass auto-genocide of their race and culture because the New Normal Morality of EU is white self-loathing. So, true/higher morality mustn’t simply rely on whatever happens to be the norm. The norm could be right, but it could also be wrong; or it could be right only within a limited context within time and space. For Jesus to be the savior of All Mankind for All Time, he cannot accept the norm of the ‘good life’ in THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, no more than Arthur can accept the life of a normal man in EXCALIBUR. Anyway, because the highest morality of Christianity is so impossibly lofty, it logically leads to anti-nature and anti-life. If indeed the celibate Jesus and His Disciples led the most exemplary life and if the highest Christian morality consists of emulating them, then if every man becomes an ideal Christian and lives like Jesus and His Disciples, mankind will soon disappear since no one will have sex and have babies. There is a similarly anti-nature and anti-life lesson at the core of Buddhism, which is closely associated with Jainism. If every living thing is trapped in an illusion, and if the goal of every living being is to be reincarnated as a human[as only humans can reach Nirvana], and if the ideal of every human is to attain eternal self-extinction via attainment of Nirvana, then it means that if everything goes according to plan, there will be no life. All life forms would eventually have been reincarnated as humans, and all humans would have reached Nirvana. Such ultra-idealism is anti-nature and anti-life, since nature and life are inherently imperfect and chaotic. We live in a secular and materialistic age, but it seems that ultra-narcissism is exerting a similarly anti-life influence on society. We live in the Age of Beaudda — beauty buddha. We don’t seek Nirvana, but we do seek something like ‘Narcina’, narcissist-nirvana. We are no longer content with the real in our obsession with the ideal. Good enough is no longer good enough for many people. They must have the best, but since most people are not the best, they cannot attract the best. So, they just wait and wait for the best that never comes along, or they decide never to settle down and immerse themselves in pop culture fantasies of ‘coolness’ that makes believe everyone is a super-star or very hip/cool character. Consider the lunatics in GONE GIRL. Consider Diane Selwyn, who is so obsessed with her dream of having it all — stardom and a great beauty as her friend/lover — that she cannot be content with anything/anyone less. Though ‘Narcina’, unlike Nirvana, is pro-sex and pro-sensuality, it is no less anti-nature and anti-life because it makes people reject anything but the ‘best’ that happens to be a rare quality.) A healthy person has a realistic connection with reality and functions in a manner that is able to provide food, clothing, and shelter for oneself. But some people suffer from severe depression stemming from the fact that one’s actual reality is so unlike one’s desired ‘ideality’. Though some people are clinically depressed for biochemical reasons, others become depressed because they become so desirous of what they cannot be or have. The latter kind of depression might be solved if one could indeed have everything one desires, whereas the former kind of depression can only be treated biochemically since it’s a matter of chemical imbalances. Diane Selwyn seems to be suffering from depression resulting from the dissonance between her desire and her situation. (To be sure, there may be certain kinds of personalities that fixate on some new obsession as soon as the previous obsession has been satiated. It’s like the character of Nixon in Oliver Stone’s film is so sure that he will be happy and satisfied if he wins the 1968 Presidential election, but he is soon chased by new demons as he pursues bigger prizes after his victory. Just when one thinks all problems will be solved if one gets what one wants, what one finally got isn’t so special anymore, and he/she must reach new highs with new pursuits. It’s every Superbowl is followed by a dream of the next Superbowl.) Diana’s desire for Camilla and professional ambition(to be both a great actress & a great star) are too much, and indeed, the two obsessions are intertwined for the winner in profession is also the one who usually wins in sex. (After all, Kesher is hardly a super-stud, but he can attract beautiful chicks because he’s a hot director in Hollywood.) If Selwyn had failed as an actress but still had Camilla, it might not have been so bad. Suppose Camilla had failed as an actress too. Both Diane and Camilla would have been in the same boat. At the very least, they would have had each other. But Camilla wins the game and makes it into the industry. This leads to not only professional envy on the part of Selwyn but sexual jealousy because Camilla, as a winner, can simply dump the loser Diane for the hotshot director and higher-class lesbian lovers. Thus, Diane loses everything she cares most about. She lost her chance at making it in Hollywood. Furthermore, she lost her friend and lover because she failed professionally.
Mulholland Dr. - Camilla smooches her new lesbian lover
If Diane had made it and been wooed by the hotshot director and found other lesbian lovers and if Camilla had been the loser, would Diane have done to Camilla what Camilla did to her? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe because Diane can be nasty and bitchy. Maybe not because it’s possible that her love for Camilla(a greater beauty as anyone can tell) was more powerful than Camilla’s love for her. Another question. Did Diane truly love Camilla when the latter was alive? Or did she just have the hots for Camilla? When Camilla was alive and quit sexually availing herself to Diane, the latter took the rejection personally and even seemed to want Camilla out of her life. Diane was resentful of Camilla’s success and seemed determined to lead a life without her. At one point, we see her yelling at Camilla who’s come to visit her, telling Camilla to get lost and leave her alone. Diane’s attitude really changes AFTER Camilla invites her to Adam Kesher’s mansion. It’s there that Diane sees how the rich Hollywood folks live and treat the likes of her. It’s there that she’s made to feel like a total nobody. Prior to that moment, she had the personal will to reject Camilla and go her own way. She could tell herself that she pushed Camilla out of her life. But at the mansion, Diane is placed in a situation where she is made out to be the one who’s been rejected and tossed into the trash bin. (Was Camilla’s invitation then just an act of revenge against Diane’s shabby treatment of her earlier? How dare the loser Diane tell her to get lost when she, Camilla, the new queen of Hollywood, is the one who’s in a position to step all over Diane?) Earlier, when Diane in a fit of anger refused to speak to Camilla, she was the driver of her own emotions. But at the mansion, she’s made to feel that she’s a nobody and a nothing. It doesn’t matter what she thinks or feels because she’s a nothing and a nobody, a loser who’s only worthy of mockery and derision. It was the evening at the mansion that drives Diane to truly hate Camilla, even to the point of having her killed. Very likely, she spent her entire savings to hire some assassin to carry out the job. She’s out of cash and without will to work, especially with the burden of remorse that soon overcomes her after the contract has been fulfilled. It’s only a matter of time before she ends up on the streets.
After Diane’s hatred leads to Camilla’s murder, she falls in love with Camilla-as-Rita to a degree way beyond her love for the real-life Camilla. Her vengeful hatred has been replaced by remorse and guilt. And as Camilla is no more in flesh, she has been turned into a ghostly spirit whose destiny can be directed in the dreamworld inhabited by Diane Selwyn.(What Diane feels for Camilla is something like ‘lovate’, hate borne of love. It’s one of the oldest themes in art, fiction, literature, mythology, etc. Paradoxically, the one you love most is likely to be the one you hate most. It’s like what happens in CARMEN. Even THE ILIAD is about ‘lovate’ as the Greeks are filled with both love and hate for Helen, or filled with hate stemming from love. She is supposedly the most beautiful woman and was stolen by the Trojans. But maybe the hussy just went with the pretty boy Paris. If she were ugly, who’d give a damn? But because she is beautiful, the Greeks must fight. She has the beauty that all men love. But because she ran off with Paris, they are filled with seething hate too. They are out to save her to kill her. It’s like Ethan is filled with ‘lovate’ for Debbie in THE SEARCHERS. Many people are bound to hate most whom they love most since, in most cases, the person that one loves most isn’t likely to reciprocate the love. It’s like the Greek mythology where Cupid usually shoots one person with the golden arrow but shoots the other with a lead arrow. So, the person one loves most isn’t likely to return the affection. And the stronger the love, the stronger the hatred borne of frustration. Diane really really loves Camilla, so when Camilla dumps her, it isn’t the simple kind of hatred but a burning kind of hatred fueled by tortured love. Simple hate is easier to deal with than ‘lovate’. You hate some people, and that’s that. The basis of such hate is simple dislike. You hate him/her because you just do. Also, other people’s hatred toward you affect you differently in relation to how you feel about them. If people you despise hate you, you don’t much care since the hatred is mutual. If people you feel indifferent to hate you, you might wonder why but you don’t really care since you don’t give a crap about them. But if someone you love hates you, it fills you with all sorts of dark complexes. Also, there is love based on respect and love based on pity. Love based on pity is condescending at best. It’s for children, not lovers; this is why Bill Harford in EYES WIDE SHUT feels insulted when his wife says she felt love for him based on pity. Before Camilla totally dumped Diane at the Hollywood party, she’d shown some affection based on pity. Because they’d been friends as aspiring actresses, Camilla found some small roles for her. Diane was grateful but also insulted that she had to live on these crumbs of Camilla’s kindness. Better to have the power/respect and show off one’s kindness to others — like Betty does toward ‘Rita’ in the fever-dream — than be the object of another’s pity, especially if he or she happens to be the lover you want to impress most. It’s like the fat homo in PRICK UP YOUR EARS couldn’t stand to see his fruitkin lover — played by Gary Oldman — find success and leave him in the dust.)
At any rate, what is the most horrible thing in MULHOLLAND DR.? Though Diane Selwyn’s dream/fantasy has elements of whimsy and romance, it also has horror-istic elements of paranoia, diabolic conspiracies, nightmarish surrealism, and lurking dangers. The horrible things in the dream/fantasy have an element of dark mystery that seems either unsolvable or inaccessible. Sometimes, the mood is downright sinister, oppressive, claustrophobic, and frightful. And yet, even these morbid elements aren’t as horrible as something far simpler. The true horribleness in MULHOLLAND DR. consists of the simple mundane details of Diane Selwyn’s life. The true horror that Selwyn cannot face is that she’s an untalented hack actress, she’s responsible for the murder of Camilla, she may be pursued by the law, and she’s likely run out of money & faced with hardship. Physically, financially, and psychologically, she’s falling apart, and there is no grand mystery about any of it. There is no elaborate conspiracy or mystery as to why she’s in the strait she is. She failed because she has no talent, and she had someone killed out of jealousy and resentment.

Therefore, paradoxically, the seemingly dark horrors within the dream/fantasy are actually comforting to Diane Selwyn for they obfuscate, mystify, and mythologize the simple details of her miserable life that she simply cannot face. Simple mundane problems are really the most horrible things in our lives and in our world. Unable to deal with them, we prefer elaborate theories, fantasies, imaginations, or some such to help us take our minds away from the fact that the real problem is a lot simpler. And yet, because they are simpler, they are more difficult to handle, not least because there are competing forces, competing narratives, overwhelming odds, and/or certain social taboos. Simple problems require real solutions, but real solutions are harder to come by than fanciful solutions to fantastic problems. In THE EXORCIST, we can believe in the fantasy of two noble priests driving devil out of a girl. But how do you deal with the real problem of black crime in the Washington D.C. community? Black crime is mundane and real enough. It’s a case of thugs running around and acting like louts. But the problem is difficult to handle because of the cult of ‘anti-racism’ and ‘white guilt’ and because there are too many blacks and too many laws that protect criminals.

Or consider the rape problem for the white Liberal community. The simple truth is that much of the rape in this country are committed by black thugs. It’s a mundane truth known to anyone with any degree of honesty. But as the white Liberal community believes in the mythology of MLK, black holiness, and ‘white guilt’(as part of ‘legacy of slavery’), it is incapable of honestly dealing with the problems of race and rape. (Though blacks rape the most, it’s still true that most black men do not, and so, increasing numbers of white women are going with black men. Indeed, in the Age of Obama, white women are attracted to black men for four different reasons: physical, political, sensual-musical, ‘spiritual’. Physically, black men are most muscular and biggest-donged; they are star athletes and ‘mandingos’. Politically, blackness is much prized as forceful and colorful. Blacks are considered more eloquent and commanding as ‘leaders’. In music, black sensuality and eroticism turn on both white boys and girls. There is also the ‘spiritual’ sense to the Negro for he is associated with MLK and ‘slavery’. So, white girls who have mulatto babies feel that their ‘racist’ ovaries are being baptized clean with Negro sperm, or holy watermelon. So, today, we don’t just see fat white trash women going with Negroes but fancy gentrifying urban white women going with Negro men. Let’s face it, the white race is now officially a disgrace, especially as pathetic white boys now lack all spine and resolve to do anything about this.) In order for America to deal with the problem of rape and other issues related to racial problems(stemming from black vileness), we need to talk honestly about the danger posed by blacks on America. But the white Liberal community simply cannot deal honestly with this issue because of its sacred myths and taboos. It’s like Diane Selwyn, racked with guilt & love for Camilla/Rita and obsessed with the desire to be a great star/actress, simply cannot accept the mundane fact that she never had talent and that she had her former lover killed in a fit of jealousy. Her addiction to her own wishful myths makes it impossible for her to face the simple truth. She would rather deal with grandiose elaborate horrors of imagination than face the simple truths of her life that are indeed the most horrible things to her. She would rather believe in some grand conspiracy that’s after Rita’s life and working to destroy her career than admit to the fact that she never had a chance because she lacked talent. In her dream/fantasy, she can make believe that she could have made it but for the intervention of some sinister gangster conspiracy. She could also make believe that Camilla-as-Rita is a woman-of-beautiful-soul who’s dependent on her love and support, someone whose rejuvenation is made possible by Betty’s kindly angel-like intervention. Of course, this Betty is the perfect girl who has the talent to be both a great actress and a great star as well a heart of gold that goes out of its way to help a lost soul. In a way, the fact that the two women are lesbians(or bi-sexual) underline Selwyn’s dilemma. Lesbians can make love to one another but they cannot quite connect as neither woman has a penis. Thus, there’s an element of impossibility in lesbianism that bespeaks of Diane’s situation.
Like Diane Selwyn with her own myths, our society has its own ‘sacred’ myths and taboos that it dreads to confront. Though historians and journalists are supposed to research and write the truth, they’ve also written and disseminated a lot of falsehoods and myths in the name of ‘patriotism’, ‘revolution’, and/or ‘progress’. For example, in order to atone for the ‘original sin’ of slavery in America, our society has perpetuated the myth that blacks were just the most wonderfully innocent people who’ve been oppressed and mistreated by whites infected with demented irrational fears. However, while it’s true enough that blacks had once been oppressed and treated as second-class citizens, the racial reality was never as ludicrous as the one concocted by the Narrative of white/Jewish Liberals(and even white Conservatives). In truth, as blacks are naturally stronger and more aggressive than whites, white folks had good reasons to fear the Negro in the past. In the process of defending white social order and civilization, there was no doubt that whites committed certain injustices against blacks. But the simple fact is that blacks were bound to pose a threat to white folks if blacks were allowed full legal and political equality since blacks are, by nature, less adept at maintaining civilized ways of life due to their wilder and more savage nature.
Stronger and faster Negro whupping a White Boy's Ass. So much for racial equality.
This is a truth that we can no longer ignore, but most people don’t want to face it because the implications are too frightful, at least for them. If indeed Negroes pose such a danger, won’t the only solution be massive efforts to separate the races? But that would cause so much social upheaval and chaos. Even if it might be worth the effort in the long run, it will require supreme will and effort. But the implicative prospect of racial truth is all the more frightful because so many white folks have been instilled with the myth of the Magic Negro and in the morality cult of ‘anti-racism’. As ‘racism’ has become the ultimate bogeyman of the West, no one wants to do or say anything that smacks of such ‘evil’. People dread admitting it like the guy recalling his dream in MULHOLLAND DR. dreads seeing the face of the homeless man in the back of the restaurant. Because of the Power of Myth as well as of the difficulty involved in dealing with racial problems on a large socio-political scale, most people cannot face and deal with the simple truth as to why we have racial problems.
James Watson spelled it out. Black people are really different. Watson only talked about Africa and its economic backwardness, but he also based his conclusions on his experiences with blacks in America. The implication is that black Americans will also prove to be a huge burden on the West due to their lower IQ. Many reviled Watson, but I would argue he wasn’t honest enough. The real threat posed by blacks isn’t lower IQ but the fact that they are stronger and more aggressive. But blacks are even more dangerous because they are not without certain qualities that other races finds appealing, indeed even addictive. The very qualities of blacks that cause most problems — physical strength and aggression — are also what makes them so effective in sports and funky music. So, even as people are afraid of robbing, looting, hollering, and rioting Negroes, a whole bunch of non-black women wanna have sex and even babies with Negroes — as Obama the child of a mudshark is hailed as the New Normal. Lots of women, non-black as well as black, orgasmically shake their booties to rap music and think twerking is the epitome of dancing. And white boys wet their pants as they orgasmically cheer for black athletes in the NBA and NFL. Though 2014 saw a lot of bad black behavior, especially in Ferguson and New York — though faux white rage in N.Y. had the effect of drowning out black rage — , 2015 begins with another round of national orgies over Negroes running around during the Superbowl. As our culture becomes ever more blurred between mainstream culture and pornographic culture — and also as our culture is obsessed with the cult of the cool than with meaningful substance of moral values — , the ‘mandingo’ Negro stud has become the fixture of a lot of non-black women. So, even as they clutch their purses in fear of being robbed by a Negro, they wanna have sex with Negroes. Even though they fear being raped by Negroes, they wanna have babies with Negroes. The Rebirth of the Nation is the blackening of the white womb in increasing orgies of racial suicide.
Kim Kartrashian, the role model for countless white girls of all classes who grow up twerking their ass to Rap music.
For all such reasons, many people simply cannot face and handle the truth of why the West is facing dangerous times. Due to the cult of ‘white guilt’, the myth of the Magic Negro, and the obsession with ‘mandingo’, white folks prefer the fantasy of Negro wonderfulness.
So, what are we to do about the problems related to crazy and dangerous Negroes?
We just make up fantasy narratives that explain bad Negro behavior by invoking the ‘legacy of slavery’ and ‘Jim Crow’. We pretend that more spending on pre-K education will turn Negroes into computer engineers. We pretend that if more white college graduates become teachers in black communities, more black kids will grow up to be like Obama. We pretend that if more white women have babies with blacks, there will be racial harmony by the exchange of fluids.

Worst of all, we project all the black pathologies on OTHER groups. So, even though rape is especially problematic in the black community, we pretend that it’s the biggest problem in colleges filled with blonde ‘frat boys’. So, someone like Sabrina Rubin Erdely came up with the Rolling Stone magazine article about how some freshman named ‘Jackie’ was repeatedly raped by quasi-Nazi fraternity monsters at UVA. And some years ago, there was the brouhaha about how ‘privileged’ white college students at Duke university gang-raped some black stripper. For a nation that is mostly silent about black-on-white rape — an epidemic among interracial rapes, because as many white women as black women are raped by blacks — , it sure stirs up quite a stink about virtually non-existent white-on-black rape. What can we say about a nation that is numb to 10,000s of black-on-white rape every year but gets totally hysterical about non-existent rape hoaxes involving evil white dudes raping some black women? Are we living in reality or some kind of Selwynian fantasy land?

The truth about racial violence is pretty simple. Blacks are stronger and more aggressive. And they know they are. So, they push around and brutalize other races. They commit the most rapes in proportional terms. And yet, this simple truth is the greatest horror to most Americans who’ve been turned politically correct and Negromaniacal in their worship of the worthless MLK, Oprah, Obama, Neil Degrasse Tyson, and rotten Rappers who are hailed as ‘poets’ and ‘prophets’. Because the simple truth is too frightening to a nation drugged on the opiate of ‘white guilt’ and the voodoo of ‘jungle fever’, most people prefer to cook up fantasy narratives about how the problem associated with blacks are either non-existent(just sweep them under the rug) or the product of some grand ‘conspiracy’ of ‘white privilege’, ‘white racism’, ‘white micro-aggression’, or whatever.
UVA rape hoax hysteria or hoaxeria. As in GROUNDHOG DAY, another hysteria in the near future will whip up another round of anti-white frenzy in a PC state of amnesia.
Just as Diane Selwyn couldn’t accept the fact that she had no talent and had her friend killed and thereby cooked up a fantasy where she is the savior of ‘Rita’ and the promising actress of talent who’s kept down by some sinister gangster conspiracy, America has created its own fantasies where blacks are never ever to blame or held responsible for their bad behavior since the national myth says no people suffered as much or so nobly as the Negroes did and that no people are as soulful and magical as the Negroes are. So, never mind how blacks acted in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Just blame the ‘legacy of slavery’. And never mind that Kanye West is a piece of turd who spews venom and filth all around and has made his many millions through garbage. According to George W. Bush, you’d think Mr. West is a man of weighty opinions, because, after all, Bush said the worst moment of his Presidency was when Kanye West said, "Bush doesn’t like black people." Bush must have a very high opinion of Mr. West to be thus hurt by his statements. Instead of dismissing West’s yammering as trash talk of a filthy Jafro-jiver, Bush groaned as if an important prophet misunderstood him.

Truth may be acknowledgeable if we have the power to do something about it and overcome it. But if it’s a dead-end that seals out fate and/or is at complete odds with what we most desire, then it is the ultimate horror. When Japan attacked the US, the truth was horrible enough for Americans. Thousands of Americans had tragically died in the attack US ships in Pearl Harbor were damaged, and some were sunk with their crew members onboard. But the truth wasn’t so very horrible since US had ample means to repair the damaged ships and build many more and take the war to Japan and win. But suppose US couldn’t do anything about it. Suppose Japan had the might to completely defeat the US. Indeed, such was the fate of Japan as the war dragged on. It soon dawned on the Japanese that they could do nothing to stop the war, let alone win it, unless Japan was totally defeated and forced into complete surrender and occupation. All the myths cooked up by the Japanese — hopeful(the ‘divine wind’ will save us from ‘barbarians’) or apocalyptic(it would be honorable for all Japanese to die with the Emperor than accept the humiliation of defeat) — couldn’t halt the inevitable: US would win and Japan could only survive as a conquered people turned into the prostitutes of US world order. The apocalyptic scenario was horror-istic enough but also therapeutic in fantasizing a rapture of redemptive sacrifice, i.e. all Japanese would die but as a proud warrior people who fought to the last for Emperor and nation. It’s like Hitler in his final months believed that the last redemptive hope of Germany was for all Germans to fight to the last and die was warriors like in the Viking myths. And Che Guevara hoped that the Cuban Missile Crisis would lead to World War III in which Cuba would be gloriously sacrificed in a nuclear war for the sake of World Revolution. All such fantasies are horror-istic and frightening, but they are also therapeutic for they magnify defeat or retreat into grand Wagnerian scenarios. The world goes up in flames at the end of GOTTERDAMMERUNG and the fate of the Germanic gods and heroes are horror-istic enough, BUT it’s also glorious and magnificent. In contrast, the horribleness of reality is much more frightening. It’s not operatic but gruesome. It’s like the Nazi officers and soldiers in DOWNFALL act like they’re all gonna meet glorious deaths in fits of laughter, drinking, and partying, but defeat at the ends of Soviets means grueling rape for the women and humiliation/torture for the men. It’s just horrible, totally ignoble than noble, like Jim Jeffries’ frightful mauling at the hands of Jack Johnson the fearsome Negro. Reality isn’t some ROCKY movie.
KAGEMUSHA: Myth soon to turn to Mayhem
It’s like the cavalry and soldiers magnificently charge to sure death at the end of KAGEMUSHA(Akira Kurosawa film), and it looks like nature’s pageantry of wind, fire, and forest, but when the men and horses get shot down, they are just mounds and mounds of dying and wounded flesh. Horror-ism can be mythic, but plain-and-simple horribleness is mundane. Paradoxically, horror-ism, by magnifying horribleness into a grand opera or theatricality, makes it less threatening and more therapeutic. With its mythic element, horror may have an element of romance, tragedy, magic, mystery, and allurement. And because horror transcends the rules of reality and wraps itself in irrationality, there’s always the hope that it can be defeated, overcome, or controlled through some magical power on our part. We can’t do anything about the fact that some white person is being robbed, raped, or murdered by a Negro in the D.C. area, but we can make believe that two brave priests have the spiritual magic to defeat a demon and saved the soul of a young girl in THE EXORCIST. In Horror, we can defeat Satan itself, but in the world of reality, many white folks are helpless against even a black mugger or Jewish financier.
And yet, white Americans are so helpless to do something about black crime — even though, to be sure, many Negro males have been locked up since the Clinton era — because our national culture is so swept up in the History-as-Horror-tale than history-as-reality. According to this Horror tale, poor helpless Negroes who just wanted to go along and get along were terrorized by KKK. Even though, in the 100 yrs from 1860 to 1960, only a few thousand blacks were lynched, the National Myth would have us believe that just about EVERY Negro saw a family member tortured and hanged from a tree. Such History-as-Horror-tale simplicity has so infected our minds that we seem to think there’s some magical way out save and redeem the soul of America. So, Stephen King’s horror-fairy tales of wise Negroes with magical powers — THE SHINING, THE STAND, and GREEN MILE(the one with the mountain-sized Negro who wuvs a wittle white mouse) — exert huge influence on the white mind. So, white folks look to the likes of MLK, Oprah, and Obama as not just political figures or celebrities but as magical folks who might help white folks to be exorcized of the ‘original sin’ of slavery. It’s because such nonsensical horror-fairytale myth pervades our consciousness that white folks are so helpless to do anything about the actual reality of black problems. If white folks weren’t infected with a false history-as-horror-tale-as-fairytale myth, they’d see the reality for what it is: blacks are here in the US because idiotic whites in the past were looking for a short-term labor shortage fix. As the result, US ended up with lots of muscled Negroes from West Africa. There was bound to be problems down the line since Negroes are stronger, crazier, more aggressive, and childish. Since racial differences do exist, the sensible thing would have been to separate the races. Even today, if white folks were to face the true nature of the problem, there might be a movement to separate the races. But because most Americans are swept up in the history-as-horror-tale-as-fairytale myth of the Noble Negro and the ‘original sin’ of slavery, white folks don’t know what to do about the horribleness of black reality. Also, as the stupid PC-brain-damaged pop-culture-addicted millennials are the dumbest generation in the history of mankind — though, to be sure, they are to be lauded for appreciating TWILIGHT movies — , they’ve completely bought into the myth that interracism is a wonderful thing and that US has to much to gain by becoming more like racially mixed like Brazil, Chad, Morocco, and Mexico. It is amusing how Liberals promote diversity but their ideal societies tend to be Nordic or those in whiter cities of America such as Portland and Seattle.

When Japan attacked the US, white Americans were ready to fight back. White Americans had no history-as-horror-tale fantasy about how Japanese are so noble and how whites must atone for anti-yellow ‘racism’. Therefore, white Americans did what they had to do to defeat Japan. Black America since the 1960s has killed many more whites than Japanese did in World War II, but whites are helpless to do anything. The simple horribleness of black reality cannot be addressed and solved because of America’s taboos enforced by its PC fairytales.
Suppose you come down with sickness, and you grow sicker and sicker. Suppose it turns out you are sick because you’re stricken with a certain cancer. It’s really as simple as that. But in such simplicity is the horrible truth that you are getting sicker and might die soon. Suppose you pretend that it’s not really cancer that you’re afflicted with but some demon possession that is trying to take away your body and soul. It is more horror-istic, but it’s also therapeutic since you can tell yourself that you might be able to do something about it by summoning the power of God and angels. Even if you lose and must face death, you can tell yourself that you put up a good fight with the forces of light on your side against the forces of darkness. You might also tell yourself that, at the end of the battle lost, there awaits the hope of heaven. It’s like JACOB’S LADDER where a man’s death pangs become a fantasy battle between the forces of light and forces of darkness. Or consider the ending of ALL THAT JAZZ. The simple fact is Joe Gideon smokes too much and drinks too much. His heart is clogged and his liver is shot. He’s gonna die soon. But he dreams of a guardian angel and of putting on a grand finale that sums up what his life is all about.
Anyway, suppose you’re stricken with cancer. The fact is no amount of denial and fantasy is going to alter the fact that you have this horrible illness. But suppose, thankfully enough, there’s a cure for this cancer. There’s been a medical breakthrough. You may be saved. But suppose your religion forbids the implementation of this cure. So, the one ‘radical’ treatment that may save you goes unused. This horrible-ness x 2. There’s the horribleness of cancer that is killing you and the horribleness of your taboos that forbid the one treatment that can cure you.
US is stricken with a similar dilemma. America is afflicted with the Negro cancer, and that’s horrible enough. There is a cure through ‘radical’ racial separation. But the PC faith of America that worships MLK and some mountain-sized Negro who wuvs a wittle white mouse prevents America from doing the one the one thing that can save White America. But then, why is White America under such a delusion? A lot of it has to do with the Jewish virus that has infected the heart & soul of America and urges white Americans to commit racial suicide with the false religion of redemption via MLK, Jack Johnson, Kanye West, Oprah, Obama, Lavergne Cox, and the mountain-sized Negro who wuvs a wittle white mouse.

The meaning of therapy is ambiguous and oftentimes muddles than clarifies issues. Therapy can be confrontational or evasive. Confrontational therapy has its advantages and disadvantages, as does evasive therapy. If the repressed or hidden matter that is haunting someone’s psyche can be found and fixed, confrontational therapy can do some good. Air out the dirty laundry and clean it. But if the matter cannot be fixed, locating and exposing it might make things worse. It’s like a bullet wound. If the bullet can be found and removed from the body, ‘confrontational surgery’ is what is best. But if the bullet cannot be removed even if located or if the effort of removing it will lead to deeper scars and damage, it’s better to just leave the bullet where it is and just let it be surrounded by scar tissue. ‘Evasive non-surgery’ is better.
Some people suffer from psychological/emotional trauma or issues that might be confronted, identified, and fixed. But others have problems that cannot be fixed. Thus, dredging out the problem will only make things worse. It’s better not to perform ‘psycho-surgery’ that will expose the problem but fail to fix it. Suppose you have a scar tissue inside your body that causes aches. Suppose someone cuts your body open and exposes the scar but cannot fix it. The surgery will only have made it worse.
Diane Selwyn in MULHOLLAND DR. has a scar that cannot be fixed. So, whenever her mind, via many detours, arrives at the dark truth, it doesn’t lead to clarity and luminance but greater horror and abject darkness. When she opens up her deepest scar, it just festers and hurts to the point of unbearableness. Truth doesn’t set her free. It just deepens her bruises. It just makes her infection fester even more.
Edward Cullen of TWILIGHT. Mind-reader. You can read minds too. If people can't read minds, how could novelists and dramatists write all those plays with multiple characters when everyone is locked within his or her own mind? It's because most minds are driven by the same impulses and drives. 'Money, sex, money, sex, cat.'
This is why certain forms of psychiatry prefers to help patients evade their problems than confront them. Also, contrary to what most people may think, most psychological problems are simple than complex. (It’s the psychological complex vs. psychological complexity rule. While the human mind is capable of tasks of great intellectual complexity, human emotions come in basic forms, and what we call ‘complexes’ are cultural complications of simple natural drives. For example, most men naturally want to dominate their women. But modern society says men and women should be equal. So men are pressured to repress their natural male energies that are derided as ‘male chauvinism’. At the same time, women go wild about rap music that calls them ‘bitchass hos’. Social repressions and mixed signals lead to complexes in the male psyche. But these complexes are not matters of complexity but matters of simple drives forced to wear false masks.) Sure, the human mind is the most complex organ that we know of in the universe. Of course, human mind is capable of lots of things. But when it comes to human emotions, drives, instincts, and passions, there are really few simple rules. And it’s easy to read most minds. It’s like Edward Cullen reads minds with ease. If someone comes out of the desert and you place a glass of cold water on a table, one doesn’t need to be a genius to know what he wants. He wants the cold glass of water. Why? He’s freaking thirsty. Even if he lies and says he doesn’t want or need the glass of water, you know he’s lying. If he’s human — and he is — , of course he wants a glass of water since he survived walking through a hot desert. Most humans are driven by drives/emotions of hunger, thirst, need-to-piss-and-poo, need-to-sleep, need-to-rest, need-to-have-fun, lust or ‘boing’-ness, narcissism, ‘greed’ or materialism, will-to-power, need-for-approval, and etc. While some people have innate mood disorders and psycho-physiological maladies, many people who claim to be ‘depressed’ or messed-up feel the way they do because their simple basic desires have been thwarted. And psychiatry cannot help them since it cannot deliver what they really want. If some guy wants to be a billionaire like Bill Gates but hasn’t the brains or the means, then psychiatry cannot help him. If someone wants to be handsome and loved by girls but happens to be ugly and repugnant, psychiatry cannot help him since girls will never love him. Of course, the psychiatrist can tell him or her that there’s more to life than one’s main desire or ambition, i.e. there are other things one can settle for and excel in and find meaning with. But such advice is more philosophical than truly psychological, in which case maybe we need more philosophers offering advice than psychologists, psychoanalysts, or psychiatrists pretending to ‘fix’ the minds of people with depression or other maladies. Indeed, I’ll bet most cases of ‘depressions’ can simply be ‘fixed’ if everyone can get what they want. If some guy wants to be a mega-millionaire, he will be happy with millions. If a certain woman wants to be gorgeous and marry some cool hunk, she will be happy if her wish were granted. So, the problems in many cases are not innately psychological but physiological and social. Too many people can’t make their dreams come true. (This problem gets worse in our pop-culture-centric society since pop ideals are almost purely cosmetic and matters of superficial style than substance. The cult of the cool has turned our society into a nation of fools. Indeed, the cult of the cool narrows people’s tastes and shallows out their souls. If one is primarily obsessed with the ‘cool’, how will he or she have the patience, the heart, or the empathy to appreciate something like BICYCLE THIEVES, IKIRU, PATHER PANCHALI, GRAPES OF WRATH, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, ONE WONDERFUL SUNDAY, LA STRADA, or RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY. The great thing about SHANE was the hero reminded the kid that coolness is just a myth. It’s not what real life is all about. So, he tells the kid to return to his parents and take care of them. In reality, no one is really cool. Even the most famous end up like Muhammad Ali or O.J. Simpson. Youth goes by too fast. It wasn’t long before Ali was totally humiliated by Larry Holmes. So, life teaches us humility and fallibility of all things. Even the Nietzschean Will-to-Power stuff is just so much hot air. So, where was Richard Spencer’s Will-to-Power when he was arrested and treated like a bitch by Hungarian authorities? Neo-Fascist Humanism is the only thing that can save us. The effect of the idiotic cult of the cool can be seen in the godawful movie GONE GIRL, one of the most vapid pieces of crap I ever did see. Some might defend the movie as a satire on the cult-of-cool-culture, but I’d argue that it, like PULP FICTION, wallows in its own slime and filth. To be sure, it’s not as offensive as GIRL WITH A DRAGON TATTOO, sadistic revenge porn that pretends to have a moral message because... uh... the Nazis dun it! MULHOLLAND DR. explores the cultural landscape of the cool and stylish but exposes it as shallow and empty for both winners and losers. Hollywood is a festival of zombies.) In the past when most people were more ‘innocent’ and earnest and had smaller ambitions, they might be content with some little job, a family, and house. But with pop culture and celebrity mania, so many people grow up with dreams of being a ‘great big success’. So, unless one makes it, one feels like a ‘total failure’. Diane Selwyn could have had a decent life if she’d chosen something more realistic in life. But she fell in love with the dream of Hollywood stardom. When her star didn’t rise to the firmament, she fell into severe depression and fits of jealousy that led to the killing of her former lover that led to an even deeper spiral of depression.
On the other hand, is greatness and tragedies possible without delusions? If there were no Willy Lomans in the world, the world might be a happier place, but also one with less material for dramatists like Arthur Miller.

Given the mundane brutality of truth, many people need lies to go on living. These lies could be delusions, fantasies, hopes, or diversions, like how Woody Allen’s character in HANNAH AND HER SISTERS finally finds ‘meaning’ from a Marx Brothers movie. Actually, he doesn’t so much find the meaning-of-life as the meaning of the meaningless-of-life that can nevertheless be bearable with a sense of humor and absurdity. But there are manageable lies and there are out-of-control lies. In DEATH OF A SALESMAN, the lies eventually take over and consume Willy Loman.
Furthermore, because of the ambiguity of all the ‘signs’ and symbols that people employ, they can easily become lost in the meanings they seek and assume to understand. Consider Shakespeare’s MACBETH where the tragic hero is told that his domain will be safe as long as the forest doesn’t come to his castle. He is told no man born of a woman can destroy him. Macbeth feels confident because, after all, forests don’t have legs and can’t move around. And what man isn’t born of a woman? Yet, as lawyers know all too well, words have different meanings. While a forest itself cannot move, parts of the forest can be moved. And ‘born of a woman’ can mean being the product of a mother(which applies to all men), but it can also mean born from the vagina of a woman. Macbeth, in his wish to believe in his own invincibility, chose to cling to the most obvious meaning of what the witches told him, but there are OTHER meanings. Likewise in MULHOLLAND DR., Diane Selwyn takes bits and pieces of various images, words, & sounds and constructs meaning out of them to suit her psycho-agenda/narrative. But all these bits & pieces, all these fragments & puzzles, can be constructed in myriad ways, and finally, despite all the evasions, there remains the simple and brutal fact of reality that cuts through the web of lies. (Also, the same words can be played with different emotional meanings. Consider the audition-script that Betty received from Coco. When we first hear the words from the script shoot out of her lips at ‘Rita’, we think she’s angry with her newfound friend. But we soon find out that she’s just rehearsing and ‘Rita’ is helping her by reading the other part[rather unemotionally]. It’s a case of situational irony since ‘Rita’ is indeed an ‘actor’ of Diane Selwyn’s fever-dream mind-play. Even ‘Betty’ is a figment, an ideal of what Diane wants to be than what she is. Anyway, while ‘Rita’ reads the lines very flatly and perfunctorily, Betty reads the lines in a very straightforward manner with conventional emotions. She plays the angry daughter of a man whose friend is coming onto her. There’s no nuance, no shade in her rehearsal. And we assume that she plans to play it that way at the audition. But at the audition, as the other actor — a handsome older man type — pulls her close, Betty’s reading of the lines takes on an entirely different hue than in the earlier rehearsal with ‘Rita’. In the earlier rehearsal, she only expressed outrage at the man — whose lines are spoken by ‘Rita’ — coming onto her. And when she threatened ‘him’ with the kitchen knife, the anger of her character was palpable. But at the audition, the words are spoken in hushed tones of inner conflict. She wants to pull away from the embrace of the seducer — who’s sort of like the Hungarian playboy at the party in EYES WIDE SHUT — , but she finds herself fallen under his spell. She feels his power over her, and she can’t resist. She’s torn up inside, and tears flow from her eyes. Instead of commanding/controlling the emotions — as in her rehearsal with ‘Rita’ in the kitchen — , she finds herself helpless against the emotions that swell from within her. It’s as if she’s being chauffeured by some strange hidden logic of the role than in the driver’s seat. She becomes so entwined with the role that her performance is truly amazing. The contrast between her rehearsal and her audition parallels what happened to Diane Selwyn. Upon being ‘betrayed’ by Camilla, she felt the simple rage of vengeance and getting even. She was so sure that she hated Camilla and wanted her murdered, indeed more than anything else in the world. She felt like the Betty playing the angry daughter in the rehearsal in the kitchen. But after the murder has taken place, Betty finds herself overcome with emotions she never expected or anticipated — like Betty’s discovery of unexpected emotions in the audition. She finds herself more in love with Camilla than she ever thought possible. When Camilla was alive, Diane felt passion, lust, and even love for, but she also felt competitive, resentful, envious, touchy, and bitchy. She felt jilted when Camilla went off on her own to find glory in Hollywood. And this feeling of being hurt and betrayed had a restraining effect on Diane’s love for Camilla. If Camilla were alive, Diane would still want her and long for her, but her feelings of anger and betrayal would also make her hate her. But now that Camilla is dead and gone forever, no one can have her. If anything, since Diane’s love for her was the most intense — Kesher essentially wanted her as a trophy wife — , one could say Diane has a ‘spiritual’ claim on Camilla more than anyone else. No one loved Camilla with such obsession. Since Diane no longer has to compete with the dead Camilla, the envy and rage have ebbed and abated. Furthermore, since Diane had her murdered, she’s overcome with guilt and remorse — sort of like what Noodles feels about Max in ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA where the former was led to believe that his tip off to the cops sealed the fate of his dearest friend though, in fact, he was trying to save him. And since Diane cannot deal with this reality, she feels a need to create an alternate reality where she is ‘Betty’ and Camilla is ‘Rita’ and where they can be the best of friends and even lovers. The mind is a strange thing. It’s like the opening dance sequence of MULHOLLAND DR. plays tricks on our perception. There are actually just a handful of couples, but the screen looks filled up with lots of different dancers because the same couples have been duplicated within the frame. Much of MULHOLLAND DR. works according to the same logic. It’s all happening in the mind of one person, but the mind has duplicated, repeated, and multi-projected a handful of images, sounds, and emotions to epic proportions. Indeed, MULHOLLAND DR. is a rather low-budgeted indie movie — at least compared to most Hollywood productions — , but it has an epic feel and even epic-like length at 2 hrs and 25 min. It doesn’t have much in the way of special effects, and even the effects are mostly tools of ‘old cinema’. Also, some of the techniques might be called ‘crude’ and ‘primitive’, like moments of out-of-focus shaky camera. And yet, the mind is a vast infinite dark space of fantasy, memory, what-if-scenarios, mood spectrums, and anxieties. Lynch, by using the camera, sounds, and movements at key moments like unstable and faltering apparatuses of the mind, creates a epic/tragic/labyrinthine effect by intimating and hinting at unstable forces and endless variations of the mind. If Diane were to return to her mind-scenario again, it would likely play along the same basic lines but some of the old threads and moods would be lost and replaced by new ones. The mind may be infinite, but it’s also finite because obsession refocuses our minds on a limited number of ideas, images, and sounds that have the most appeal and meaning to us. There is no definite and final "director’s cut" in the realm of dream and fantasy. Dreams refresh, replenish, and repeat themselves but they simultaneously wilt, decay, and deteriorate. We don’t know how many times Diane Selwyn replayed her dream/fantasy in her mind — the woman with whom she switched apartments complains that Diane hadn’t responded to her visits for three weeks — , but the dream/fantasy likely always returns to the room where the dead and decaying body is found. The body probably signifies the murdered corpse of Camilla as well as Diane’s ‘spiritually’ wilting self rotting away as she navigates through dreams and fantasies on her bed. It’s also a premonition of what awaits Diane as she seems incapable of rising above her depression and returning to any kind of normal life. The detectives, the landlord, and creditors will be knocking on her door. She will likely end up homeless, especially as she lost the will to work and live.
So, the great horror is symbolized by the homeless man sitting by the garbage dump of some restaurant. Or the homeless man could represent the constant process of decay and filth that is very much a part of our physiological makeup. We are always ‘rotting’ inside, which is why our bodies are like plumbing systems. The filth has to be constantly cleansed out by the process of peeing and pooing. Body produces stuff that seeks to be released. Men produce sperms that demand to be ejaculated, as with the eel-like creatures in ERASERHEAD. Women produce menstrual blood. Men and women must poo and pee several times a day. And babies constantly need to pee and poo, and parents must clean them all the time. Babies cannot feed and clean themselves, which is why the weirdo-baby in ERASERHEAD is such a hassle to its main character; it’s a eating-and-shitting-machine. Even the mind is like a excretory organ. It fills up with emotions, words, images, and etc. that scream to be expressed and channeled. It’s like the guy’s head in ERASERHEAD is like a penis that needs to be rubbed, and in the final scene, we see its neuronic dust swarming all over the air like ejaculated sperm inside a vagina. The film could have been called ‘dickhead’, and the guy’s hair is rather like Beavis’s[of BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD]. Because the physiological makeup is like a sewer system, there is a dirty, diseased, and filthy ‘homeless man’ inside all of us whose dirty job is to regulate all the filth and junk. The body must always flush things out and throw things out. If the body holds onto piss and poo, it will die. The mind is part of the body. Our consciousness and perceptions are manifestations of bio-chemical and physio-sensual processes. And as our minds are filled with junk, clutter, mess, obscenity, anger, doubt, and etc., our emotions and ideas grow stale and sick too. They too must be disposed of in order to make room for new batch of ideas and images. Of course, the new batch of ideas and images are very much recycled products of earlier ones. It’s like we remove the pee and poo from our intestines and bladder, but we eat more or less the same foods to fill up with new pee and poo. The problem with obsession is that the mind clings to a fixed set of ideas, images, and/or sounds, and cannot let them go. The mind loves them so much that they are held and pored over again and again and again and again. And the mind tries to keep them fresh by replaying them with slight variances, but eventually, the variations will begin to subvert the system and call into doubt the validity of the obsession in relation to reality. It’s like Jack Torrance in THE SHINING keeps returning to the Overlook Hotel again and again and again. His ‘eternal soul’ is obsessed with the place. His ‘return’ is both a fresh ‘new start’ and the stale ‘same story’. In the end, Diane’s constipated mind/soul cannot sustain the freshness and blissfulness of her inner-narrative anymore. She may return to the story and begin again about how this girl named ‘Betty’ came to Hollywood to find her dream. Diane may invoke inner-amnesia to pretend that she knows nothing of how she’s a failure as an actress and forever lost her lover who was murdered by none other than herself. But the blissfulness of this amnesia cannot sustain itself. The shit and rot keep piling up. And it’s not just a little bit of doggy poo that Coco finds on the condominium ground. It’s the full rotting corpse.) All lies lead to truth, eventually. It’s like THE SWIMMER — with Burt Lancaster — where the main character finally makes it to home to find himself faced with the truth that he no longer has a family and a place to call home. In the end, Diane Selwyn, like the character in Edgar Allan Poe’s TELL TALE HEART, cannot bury the truth of what she is and what she did. Her lies are not manageable. In LIFE OF PI, there’s a character who has constructed what might be called a manageable lie. After the shipwreck, he became the lone survivor after a harrowing ordeal that involved the death of his mother and his murder of a man he came to loathe. But as a form of self-therapy, he constructed a useful myth that turned the elements of his trauma and tragedy into fable-like metaphors. And through the use of these quasi-religious metaphors, he was able to find psychological and spiritual peace. Of course, one could argue that things work out in LIFE OF PI because even the realistic parts of the movie are rather fairytale-like. Indeed, there’s nothing in the movie that really rings true, and that artificiality is part of its charm, as is the case with the French comedy AMELIE. But despite the surrealism of MULHOLLAND DR, there is an underbelly of realism that keeps groaning with intimations of the brutal truth, and when it finally grows into a scream, the horribleness cannot be muted.

In a way, Diane Selwyn in her fantasy keeps returning to the myth of her arrival in Los Angeles. Though it already happened in the past and she’s hit a brick wall since, by re-imagining her arrival — like Hitler descending from heaven in the opening of THE TRIUMPH OF THE WILL — , she can keep imagining a new beginning or the mythic beginning where everything turns out just swell and where even things that go wrong do so for reasons not of her failings or shortcomings but due to sinister forces beyond anyone’s control. This way, she can make believe that her success was due to her own talents and her failure was due to some dark monstrous conspiracy that stood in the way of her success. Also, in her fantasy, as ‘Rita’ is psycho-socially incapacitated and dependent on her support, ‘Betty’(as the alter ego of Diane) can still lay claim to her as a friend/lover despite her failure as actress due to some dark conspiracy. And since ‘Rita’ is so dependent on her, they can be friends forever in the dream.
In reality, Diane failed due to lack of talent. But not only did her career go nowhere but her dream-friend/lover Camilla chose to leave her because she found success, found a more glamorous lesbian lover, and decided to marry one of the hottest film directors in Hollywood. Diane has nothing. But in her fantasy, she could have had everything... but for the conspiracy. But even without success in Hollywood, she has ‘Rita’ as her best friend and lover. As ‘Rita’ is amnesiac, she is dependent on Betty to help her get around.
But then, since Diane imagines herself as ‘Betty’ to be so friendly, generous, and compassionate, she tries to help ‘Rita’ discover her true identity and self. After all, that’s what friends are for. But this generous side of Betty that aids ‘Rita’ to discover her true identity brings them closer to the truth that threatens the very nature of their relationship. The truth is that Betty is the persona of Diane and ‘Rita’ is the persona of Camilla. And Diane had Camilla killed. And contrary to the fantasy, Camille didn’t need any help from Diane. If anything, she’s the one who made it, and it was she who was in the position to lend a hand to Diane. And Camilla showed Diane apparent kindness by inviting her to a party at a Hollywood mansion. But then, the kindness turned out to be a form of cruelty as the evening only exposed Diane as a pitiable nobody who could only sit helpless and humiliated as Adam Kesher(the director) and Camilla announce that they are to be married.

For Diane, uncertain failure is more soothing than certain failure. As long as she re-imagines herself as ‘Betty’ arriving in Hollywood for a fresh new chance, it doesn’t matter if ‘Betty’ shall succeed or fail. Even if she’s doomed to failure, it’s something in the fuzzy ‘future’ than something already done and past. Diane is done-and-over as far as her chance of becoming a successful Hollywood star/actress is concerned. But as ‘Betty’, there’s the always hope of success; and even failure is only a possibility than a certainty. As such, it would only be an uncertain failure. Also, she could make believe that her failure was not due to her lack of talent or ability but some dark sinister force in the world. It’s like some Negroes prefer to blame all their failures on ‘racism’ or some evil ‘white conspiracy’ to get the ‘black man’. It’s like the surreal ‘talk’ that black parents have with their black sons who are led to believe that white cops and ‘white males’ like George Zimmerman is hiding behind every bush to shoot them down.
In a similar vein, the characters of KWIK STOP and IN COLD BLOOD dwell on the therapy of uncertain failure. As long as the wanna-be actor in KWIK STOP finds yet another excuse not to leave town and try his luck in the movie business, he can tell himself that he will make it sometime in the future. And if he never leaves town and never makes it and just grows old, he could look back and tell himself that IF he’d left town and gone for success, he might have made it. Thus, even his failure would have an element of ambiguity. Instead of looking back and knowing that he failed because he never had the talent, he could tell himself that he never made it because he never applied the talent. The Robert Blake character in IN COLD BLOOD keeps his hopes alive the same way. As long as he dreams of finding some sunken gold/treasure in Mexico, he can put the future ahead of him and pretend he has something to live for. And it was before Joe Buck actually went to New York that he had dreams of making it in MIDNIGHT COWBOY. Once in New York, he discovers he was never meant to be anything in life but a dishwasher or some menial laborer. If you have a feeling that you can’t make your dreams come true, don’t act on them. That way, you are burdened with uncertain failure than certain failure. With uncertain failure, you can always tell yourself that you could have made it if you tried. It’s like the uncle in NAPOLEON DYNAMITE who says crazy stuff about how he could have been such-and-such athlete.

Dreams take the form of pre-failure fantasies and post-failure fantasies. Pre-failure fantasies dwell on how everything may work out well. It’s like ‘Betty’ says she hopes to be both a great actress and a big star. Anything is possible. It’s like the world is her oyster. Because she won a jitterbug contest, she projects her optimism on the entire world as if everyone will be cheering for her like the audience at the dance contest. (Odd that there would be a jitterbug contest in the late 90s or early 2000s, but then she grew up in a small town. Something is clearly out-of-time, as with the Ball Room scene in THE SHINING and the big band jazz in MIRACLE MILE. Is it a post-modern thing? Adam Kesher himself seems to be making a pomo movie that is set in the early 60s. Could he be based on Quentin Tarantino, The hot American director of the 1990s whose sensibility is totally pomo? Indeed, the racing cars filled with teens in the first part of the movie — when ‘Rita’ is being driven to Mulholland Dr. in a limousine — could have been Diane’s mind going into pomo mode or ‘pomode’ and juxtaposing something out of the early 1960s with her contemporary world. She’s obviously seen her share of movies, and therefore, her fantasy draws on images and sounds from different eras seen in different movies. It’s telling that some people still use dial-up phones.)
Anyway, when people are met with failure, some people just accept the outcome and deal with the truth. But others cannot. So, they come to dwell on post-failure fantasies, and a particularly powerful kind overtakes Diane Selwyn. She clearly didn’t have the goods to cut it as an actress. She clearly lost the affection of her former friend/lover Camilla. Worse, Camilla is dead because of the hit Diane put on her. But Diane cannot accept any of these failures. So, she cooks up a post-failure fantasy. Post-failure fantasy works by willful amnesia. The mind pretends that all that happened didn’t happen and that the opportunity awaits once again, and everything will go right this time. It may even pretend that dead people are still alive. It may pretend that one possesses talents, skills, and secrets one doesn’t. If pre-failure fantasy is overly naive, post-failure fantasies are essentially corrupt, especially because of the willful ‘innocence’ induced by self-amnesia. In Diane’s fantasy, there’s such happy radiance about Betty as a fresh princess in Hollywood searching for a dream, but it is only possible by Diane’s willful and desperate suppression of the truth. To bury the evidence, Diane must play up the ‘innocence’ and ‘purity’ of ‘Betty’ to the hilt, but it is utterly at odds with the real Diane. And yet, on some deeper level, it isn’t entirely corrupt since Diane’s wish to be someone like ‘Betty’ is genuine. It’s true that Diane in real life is jealous, vindictive, and resentful, but she really does want to be someone like ‘Betty’ who is so good-hearted and generous. But then, Betty’s good-heartedness and generosity come with caveats. She displays them as sterling qualities to gain power and possession of ‘Rita’. Her fantasy of generosity is really the product of her jealousy and possessiveness. She wants Camilla so badly that in her fantasy, she wins the love and loyalty of ‘Rita’ through Betty’s show of infinite patience and compassion. But if Diane is truly a generous person, why doesn’t she join some Christian missionary and help out the wretched of the earth? She really wants to use her fantasy of generosity and compassion as ‘spiritual’ cosmetics to attract the love and even lust of ‘Rita’. And yet, she sincerely believes in the beauty of this dream with the heart of an angel. She will sell her soul to the devil to play angel with ‘Rita’.

Consider the contrasts between the pre-failure fantasy and post-failure fantasy in Alfred Hitchcock’s VERTIGO. Pre-failure fantasy is dark and grows intense, but it’s fueled with hope, however thorny it may be(because, after all, Madeleine is a married woman). But post-failure fantasy is haunted by gloom and doom because no matter how much Scottie yearns for Madeleine, she is gone forever. And yet, precisely because she is gone and impossible to retrieve, his obsessive passion grows even stronger to keep her alive in his heart and soul. It’s an insane cycle. Because she’s gone for good, his heart must work extra-hard to keep her alive in his soul. But this means he will yearn yet even more for a woman he can never have. It’s hard work to make the unreal into the ‘real’, and in possessing the illusion of the ‘real’, one’s obsession turns into an addiction, but the ‘real’ isn’t really real, and so, the withdrawal symptoms from the realization that the ‘real’ isn’t real grows ever darker and depressing when one periodically surfaces from the fever dream, delirium, or reveries. In the case of Diane Selwyn, she floors the mental/emotional accelerator to drive to her fantasy land, and her inner engine is being worn out. And in her confused and weary state, she’s also running low on fuel. But she keeps hitting the metal to the pedal into the lost highway. In the end, the final destination is not unlike the doom that awaits the protagonist of Federico Fellini’s TOBY DAMMIT, an adaptation of an Edgar Allan Poe short story.

The concept of the ‘other reality’, ‘inner realm’, or fantasy isn’t what makes MULHOLLAND DR. special. There are plenty of Walter-Mitty-ish stories, and there have been many movies about psychological imbalances, fantasies, and the like. Also, there have been many ‘limbo’ state movies, not least because — I suspect anyways — a lot of creative people have dabbled in drugs or were inspired by writers such as Philip K. Dick or William S. Burroughs. And with generations raised on computers, special effects, and mind-bending technology, the concept of ‘other-world-ness’ has become part of our cultural vernacular. But in most such films, these multi-dimensional ideas don’t amount to little more than gimmicks, effects, trickery, or weirdness. Consider the Sandra Bullock movie PREMONITION, Marisa Tomei movie DANIKA, Keanu Reeves movie THE LAKE HOUSE, Julianne Moore movie THE FORGOTTEN, Cameron Diaz movie THE BOX, Jake Gyllenhaal movie DONNIE DARKO, Leonard DiCaprio movie SHUTTER ISLAND, and many more. Most such films don’t amount to much since they lack sufficient psychological complexity/subtlety and emotional depth to elevate and expand themselves beyond exercises in experimentation or cleverness. Cleverness, even when brilliant, may impress as it happens but usually don’t linger in the viewer after it’s over. It’s like magic tricks can dazzle, but we don’t think of them after they’re over.
It’s the rare ‘limbo’ films like MULHOLLAND DR., MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, half of INCEPTION, THE OTHERS, TIME REGAINED, THE TRIAL(by Orson Welles despite its problems), VERTIGO, PERSONA, LA JETEE, INSOMNIA, and L’APPARTEMENT/WICKER PARK that really remain with us. In some of these films, the fantastical elements are real. Occult power does inhabit the world of MOTHMAN PROPHECIES. But in films like VERTIGO, TIME REGAINED, MULHOLLAND DR., and WICKER PARK(or EYES WIDE SHUT), there aren’t any phantom-like spirts in the literal sense, but the psychologies of the characters come under severe duress and begins to imagine things, and the barrier between dream and reality(or between fact and fantasy) begins to dissolve. Same goes for INSOMNIA and LAST TANGO IN PARIS. Al Pacino’s character’s mental state in INSOMNIA, auto-subverted by lack of sleep, anxiety about the investigation, and guilt over his dead partner, enters into a twilight state that is neither awake nor asleep, neither rational/moral nor irrational/amoral. In LAST TANGO IN PARIS, Marlon Brando’s character is so distraught and guilt-ridden over the death of his wife that he tries to hide from the world and create an alternate space in which he has no name and no shame. But of course, the division between the real and ‘unreal’ cannot be sustained indefinitely, as indeed Diane Selwyn discovers in MULHOLLAND DR. It’s like Hermann Hesse’s STEPPENWOLF or JOURNEY TO THE EAST where one’s never sure where reality ends and dream begins.
This ambiguity is very much at the core of certain genres, especially the horror and science fiction. Mystery genre may be filled with uncertainty, but it usually ends with reason and clarity winning over confusion and anxiety. There is the detective or private eye to unearth and explain it all. In horror, forces of good may win over forces of evil, but the strangeness of occult powers remains. In certain kinds of science fiction, a kind of ‘limbo’ state is created because we can no longer tell what is human and what is machine. Or we can no longer tell what is real and what is ‘virtual’. Like Diane Selwyn goes on a mind journey to recover through personal myth the lost lover/friend Camilla in the form of ‘Rita’, the son in TRON LEGACY enters a virtual ‘tronic’ universe to reconnect with his lost father. Like Camilla has a double in the form of ‘Rita’, the father has a double in the form of the sinister ‘Clu’.
At any rate, certain ‘limbo’-state movies linger not so much due to the cleverness of plot construction but the troubled moods that haunt their uncertain spaces. This is also true of movies like TOUCH OF EVIL. After it’s over, we wonder if we watched a detective story or a nightmare. Welles used the ambiguous borderland between US and Mexico to convey the psychological and moral turmoil between competing cultures, personalities, agendas, values, and egos. And same is true of LADY FROM SHANGHAI, a film in which the psychological complexity/ambiguity multiplies along with the ethnic conflicts and tensions: Irishman who’s fought in the Spanish Civil War getting involved with a wife of a crippled Jewish lawyer. They sail to South America and end up in San Francisco Chinatown. Who is who, what is what, we don’t know. There’s nothing literally occult in the film, but even its reality feels removed from the real. Of course, this was a special quality of ‘film noir’ that, though set in the real world without ghosts and such, felt haunted and stalked by irrational foreboding forces threatening to unravel values and conventions of right and wrong. (Oliver Stone did this with politics in JFK and NIXON.) A person who belongs to a mono-culture has a clearer sense of right and wrong(at least within the close-knit community), of his/her place in the order, of traditions and conventions. But when cultures clash, compete, and converge, everyone is made to feel like an exile. This was one of the fascinations and frightful qualities about the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and this sense of endless possibilities and infinite dead-ends can be felt in Franz Kafka’s THE TRIAL and THE CASTLE. If one is liberated from one’s own culture, one can be anything. But if one is without a clear identity, one doesn’t belong to any culture. Limbo. Perhaps, TOUCH OF EVIL was prophetic of what would become of America. Not only hodgepodge nation but hodgepodge sense of right and wrong and values. With so many competing ‘narratives’ of victim-hood, what are American History and American Consciousness anymore? (Charlton Heston who played the Mexican police captain in TOUCH OF EVIL also starred in Sam Peckinpah’s MAJOR DUNDEE, another film that used borderlands as metaphors for the conflicted ambiguities of society, history, and the soul. Though Peckinpah compared his film with MOBY DICK, it sounds more Joseph-Conrad-ian, and indeed, it makes for worthy comparison with Francis Ford Coppola’s APOCALYPSE NOW that was adapted from HEART OF DARKNESS by John Milius. By intention or accident, Heston also played key roles in borderland movies such as TEN COMMANDMENTS, BEN-HUR, EL CID, PLANET OF THE APES, and OMEGA MAN. In all of them, he is a figure caught between two worlds. He is a Jew caught between Jewish loyalty and gentile friends. He is a Spaniard who fights for his people but who also seeks friendship with Muslim Moors. He is a human who is chased by gorillas but kisses a chimpanzee woman on the lips — and you thought FAR FROM HEAVEN where Julianne Moore kisses a Negro was gross. Of late, THE COUNSELOR, written by Cormac McCarthy and directed by Ridley Scott, makes for an interesting socio-political-psychological limbo tale. It’s set in a multi-cultural realm where we aren’t sure of anything anymore. The only guarantee is money and the means to outplay the power game and outmaneuver others. In this ‘end of history’ scenario, the conflict isn’t about ideas or values. During the Cold War, the conflicts in Latin America were often about Marxism vs Latin nationalism vs ‘Yanqui’ imperialism. But with the ‘end of history’, it’s now all about power and money. It’s about who gets to play the oligarch and who gets to hang around with oligarchs. In a way, the speech by the estranged father at the end of AMORES PERROS was hopeful and encouraging. The wizened hitman confesses in a phone message in the form of an apology that he’d chosen wrong by having embraced radical Marxism in his youth instead of his devotion to family and daughter. The choice of radical politics had led him astray, and as a result, he lost his family and wasted away his much of his life. It’s a post-ideological realization that the personal isn’t the same as political, that the personal must be guarded from the political despite the links between them. The 60s Latin American generation, by conflating the two, made the same mistake made by Strelnikov in DOCTOR ZHIVAGO when he says the private life is dead in Russia. But, does the ‘end of history’ or end of ideology mean that the world will be a saner and happier place? Or will it mean that all the new crazed conflicts will be utterly ruthless and cynical in one’s pursuit of status, money, vanity, narcissism, and greed? Without ideology to favor the People over the Self, one’s self-interest becomes shameless in its self-promotion. Is the triumph of capitalism the triumph of self-fascism? Isn’t libertarianism a kind of self-fascism? One-person-tribalist-supremacism. Pier Paolo Pasolini feared as much when he observed capitalist-consumerism’s effect on modern Italy. Christianity is about saving the soul, and communism is about equal dignity for all workers on the basis of unity and cooperation. But the logic of capitalist-consumerism is the dream that every man can be a glamorous stud like some movie star or every woman can become a hot babe like the famous celebrities. Cosmetics and fashion sell the dream that any woman can be like a Hollywood actress. People lose their sense of the real and become addicted to the ‘ideal’ promoted by Hollywood and celebrity culture. The tragedy of Diane Selwyn is she can’t return to the world of the real and ordinary. She’s addicted to the dream of glamor and fame. She even kills her ex-friend for it. She wants the very best. Even though she’s down-and-out, she despises others who are like her. Even though she resents the rich and famous, she wants to be like them. Nothing else will suffice. She doesn’t want to be part of a club that would have her as a member. Christianity says all souls are equally precious to God. Communism says all workers are noble and dignified because they work together to make useful stuff for mankind. Capitalism is tremendously productive and efficient, but its ‘moral logic’ is ‘enough is not enough’. Indeed, it is effective precisely because it motivates people with dreams of vanity, self-promotion, and narcissism. Thus, with the End of History and triumph of capitalism, we aren’t so much left with the ideology of ‘liberal democracy’ but with the post-ideology of oligarchic fantasies to have more than others and live the Dream Life. And since the competition is ruthless all over the world for oligarchic dominance, we may be seeing something like the COUNSELOR-ization of the world. One thing for sure, US, China, Russia, EU, Latin America, and etc. are all essentially run by super-oligarchies. When we think of US today, ‘liberal democracy’ just doesn’t cut it. It’s a Jewish globo-oligarchic state for the super-rich who control all the elite institutions and industries and will use every dirty trick in the book to subvert Russia and the white American middle class/working class for greater consolidation of Jewish/homo power and white gentile collaborationist privileges. I do not say this in defense of Christianity and communism. Christianity is now a dead religion as it can’t even mount a defense against ‘gay marriage’. It’s been taken over by homos in the North and by pro-Zionist retards in the American South. As for communism, we know it was an evil ideology. Still, when Christianity and communism were powerful forces in the world, they at least applied some moral pressure on capitalism to be something more than a vanity-privilege-and-power-fest. And Fascism and European Imperialism also had positive pressures on American capitalist morality. Because Fascism was more honest and brazen about the nature of ‘will to power’ and human vanity, it alerted the capitalist-democratic West about the dangers of overt worship of power-for-power’s-sake. At its worst, Fascism served as a darker foil of capitalist narcissism. So, even as American capitalists were obsessed with power and might, they didn’t want to be as arrogant as Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler whose megalomania turned ever uglier, boastful, and narcissistic. As for European Imperialism, it was a useful foil for the US to demonstrate that American power needs to be more benign and respectful of the sovereignty of other nations. But with the demise of Fascism, European Imperialism, Communism, and Christianity[on both the Marxist Left and Conservative Right], there’s only one winner standing, and its globo-capitalism dominated by Jews and homos. And since they have no competitors to challenge them, they can become more greedy, brazen, shameless, aggressive, and arrogant in promoting and expanding their power and privileges all around the world. American Jews are now acting in ways they never would have during the Cold War. They feel they can get away with just about anything. They are acting like global gangsters. They know they can say or do anything on Wall Street, Las Vegas, Washington D.C, the academia, Big Media, and etc. and get away with it. Arnon Milchan can steal secrets from the US and still attend the Oscar ceremony with no danger of being arrested. Shelden Adelson can say US should nuke Iran and still play a prominent — if not THE prominent — role in GOP nomination process. Victoria Nuland can subvert an entire nation and keep working to mess up the world even more for Jewish interests. Wall Street Jews can rob and fleece us and then be bailed out to rob and fleece us some more. A Jewess is appointed to the Fed, and she appoints an Israeli Jew to work alongside her. If in the past, there was some balance of power in America — among Wasps, Jews, Catholics, various ethnics, blacks, homos, and etc. — , now it’s all Jewish-dominated with the backing of mulattos and homos as the mini-me of the Jews. The End of History is globo-oligarchy, and Jews rule since they are the smartest, most aggressive, most conspiratorial, and most protected by PC taboos that prohibit any honest discussion of Jewish power. In the EU, Europeans are nothing but Euro-peons of Jewish oligarchs. And Americans are Americunts to the big Jewish dicks. In the ‘end of history’, there are no more principles since power is the only thing. Principles insist upon a certain consistency, and consistency applies equally to all powers. But Jews don’t want consistency but elasticity in their power. If indeed the current Jews globo-rulers were criticized, scrutinized, and condemned like Anglo-America and Soviet-Russian elites of old, they would be in big trouble. So, Jews don’t like principles. Under the force of principles, Jewish power would have to play by the same rules that Jews had once insisted on Wasp power. Though all ideologies played dirty in the past, they did posit and push a certain consistency of principles. And if the system pushing an ideology failed to live up to them, it could be called out for its failures. So, Anglo-America could be called out for its ‘racism’ and ‘McCarthyism’ despite the American Constitution that said ‘no discrimination based on race, color, or creed’. And Soviet-Russia could be called out for its repression, mass killings, and mendacity despite its claims of being a "workers’ paradise". But in the post-ideological world, there’s less pressure of principled consistency on the powers-that-be since we no longer think in terms of grand ideas or values. Instead, we measure everything in terms of power, privilege, wealth, advantages, and status. So, ideas and ‘values’ are today shaped less by ideological consistency or intellectual honesty than by the sophistry of how well a set of ‘ideas’ and ‘values’ serve a certain interest group. So, what-is-said isn’t as important as who-says-it-and-how. And we get intimations of this in both PULP FICTION and COUNSELOR, which may be McCarthy’s answer to Tarantino’s wallowing in nihilism. Both films have ‘big speeches’ at the end. One is delivered by a Negro — Samuel Jackson in PULP FICTION — and the other is delivered by a Mexicano in COUNSELOR. Both speeches don’t say much and are anything but realistic, and yet, they exert great power because of who says it and how. Samuel Jackson has the power of the gun, so what he says sticks. The Mexican ganglord has the power to kill the counselor and his lover, so what he says takes on the weight of ‘philosophy’. But the ideas themselves, though clever or elliptical, don’t mean much. From PULP FICTION: "There’s a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. ‘The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon you.’ Now… I been sayin’ that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, that meant your ass. You’d be dead right now. I never gave much thought to what it meant. I just thought it was a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker before I popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin’ made me think twice. See, now I’m thinking: maybe it means you’re the evil man. And I’m the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here… he’s the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could mean you’re the righteous man and I’m the shepherd and it’s the world that’s evil and selfish. And I’d like that. But that shit ain’t the truth. The truth is you’re the weak. And I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be the shepherd." From THE COUNSELOR: "Because you continue to deny the reality of the world you're in. Do you love your wife so much, so completely, that you would exchange places with her upon the wheel? And I don't mean dying, because dying is easy... Yes. At the understanding that life is not going to take you back. You are the world you have created. And when you cease to exist, this world that you have created will also cease to exist. But for those with the understanding that they're living the last days of the world, death acquires a different meaning. The extinction of all reality is a concept no resignation can encompass. And then, all the grand designs and all the grand plans will be finally exposed and revealed for what they are. And now, Counselor, I have to go, because I have to make other calls. If I have time, I think I'll take a small nap... I would urge you to see the truth of the situation you're in, Counselor. That is my advice. It is not for me to tell you what you should have done or not done. The world in which you seek to undo the mistakes that you made is different from the world where the mistakes were made. You are now at the crossing. And you want to choose, but there is no choosing there. There's only accepting. The choosing was done a long time ago... Are you there Counselor?... I don't mean to offend you, but reflective men often find themselves at a place removed from the realities of life. In any case, we should all prepare a place where we can accommodate all the tragedies that sooner or later will come to our lives. But this is an economy few people care to practice... Machado would have traded every word, every poem, every verse he ever wrote for one more hour with his beloved. And that is because when it comes to grief, the normal rules of exchange do not apply, because grief transcends value. A man would give entire nations to lift grief off his heart. And yet, you cannot buy anything with grief, because grief is worthless." Whatever meaning these statements may have as ‘ideas’ or ‘insights’, they are meaningless without the power that accompanies them. Without the power of gun, Samuel Jackson’s character ranting would just be gibberish. Without the power over other men, the Mexican druglord’s words would be little more than a macabre version of CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL. If you carry a big stick, your words, loud or soft, have real weight. It’s like Don Vito Corleone’s words have meaning in relation to his power. Real ideas, in contrast, have power regardless of the power of those who say them. The words of Socrates and Jesus have lasted through the ages because they spoke a certain truth, especially to power. But the words of the Negro in PULP FICTION and the Mexican druglord in THE COUNSELOR are ‘true’ insofar as they wield the gun or the power. Some critics have said the druglord’s ‘consoling/counseling’ of Fassbender’s character isn’t realistic or plausible, and this is true enough. But McCarthy wasn’t going for realistic dialogue but rather, like a doctor with a stethoscope, listening to the murmuring logic of power in the darkness of the soul. Likewise, the Negro monologue in PULP FICTION isn’t realistic. An idea of a Negro sitting in a diner and ranting on and on instead of making a getaway before the cops arrive is ridiculous. But through his big talk, we are treated to the ‘end of history’ logic of power. "I Have a Dream" turned into "I am the Nightmare, Mothafuc*a, so don’t mess with my ass." Power is what counts. Some have it, some don’t. Some make it out, while others are shit out of luck. There’s a hierarchy of powers, and there’s nothing you can do about it in the ‘end of history’. You have to accept the situation as it is, especially if you don’t know how to play the game or if you played it, gambled, and lost.)

Anyway, the idea of fantasy is nothing in fiction. Many books and movies are pure fantasy, and the whole point is for us to escape into this la-la-land where dreams come true or where nightmares give us frightful pleasures. Most fantasies make us forget about the world, and most horror movies, even when they scare us, don’t really disturb us. We know that the world of horror is safely divorced from any world we know. In contrast to such films are the realist films and fiction, docu-dramas, and social/political storytelling. They claim to bring us closer to the problems of ‘reality’ as mainly defined by problems of ‘ordinary people’, struggles of ‘poor people’, the tribulations of the ‘oppressed’, or challenges of social activists. Some are more intelligent and artier than others, but they tend to eschew elements that might be genre-like or unrealistic, though the ‘school of writing’ known as ‘magic realism’ sought to combine social commentary/satire with mysticism/poetic imagination.
But then, there are films like MULHOLLAND DR. that are difficult to categorize because, on the one hand, they seem to fit into the genre mold. Based on how it begins, David Lynch’s film might be considered film noir, murder mystery, fairytale, satire, horror, surrealism, comedy, gangster film, or even science fiction with the appearance of the strange blue box. And yet, it fits no single mold. Just when we think it’s a comedy and stick in the appropriate mental key, it won’t turn and calls for a different genre key. Consider the scene where Adam Kesher had to go see the ‘cowboy’. It sounds very silly. Kesher is hiding out from gangsters, and all of a sudden, he has to see some guy called the ‘cowboy’? We laugh along with him. And when he’s face to face with the ‘cowboy’, it all seems very amusing. But the ‘cowboy’ won’t have any of it, and he commands the attention and even respect of Kesher who realizes this isn’t some joking matter. And in an earlier scene, two men are seen in a restaurant. It starts out sort of funny. One guy — who looks like an Armenian — tells his friend that he had a weird dream about being in this restaurant. And the friend smiles, and it seems sort of funny. Then the guy relates how the dream turned into a terrible nightmare in which he met some guy whose horrible face scared the living daylights out of him. The light comedic mode quickly dissipates, and soon enough, he realizes that he is in the dream he’s talking about, which means he faces the prospect of seeing the man with the horrible face once again. Unlike a genre movie that can stick to one mode, the human mind is far less stable, and dream-space won’t play by consistent genre rules. Diane Selwyn, in her dazed stupor, may dream up sunny and cheerful moments in her fantasies, but they are threatened and subverted by her fears, anxieties, and aches. When her mood grows dark, her mind might settle for something like a horror-genre mode, but even that cannot hold for long since the human mind is always shifting gears from one mode to another. It lacks the strict discipline that an artist/entertainer can apply to his work. It is how Lynch caught this crazy unstable nature of the mental-mood processes that makes MULHOLLAND DR. stand above most films of its kind. This unstable aspect of the mind is elusive, shifty, murky, vague, opaque, and fragile. This is why directors who try to make fantasies and dreams seem overly ‘different’ fail since the strangeness has been made all too obvious as STRANGENESS. When vagueness and opacity have been made obvious and visible, it sort of defeats the purpose. Only a handful of artists have really been successful in conveying the evasive essence of dream state, and even they hit the bull’s eye only a few times. Think of David Cronenberg with eXistenZ, Stanley Kubrick with THE SHINING, Luis Bunuel with LOS OLVIDADOS, Alfred Hitchcock with VERTIGO, Christopher Nolan with INSOMNIA, Kenji Mizoguchi with UGETSU, Carl Dreyer with VAMPYR, Steven Spielberg with A.I., and some others. MULHOLLAND DR. is very near the top, and it’s all the amazing since Lynch utilized the simplest tools to create the effect. What Lynch does with a simple shot of L.A. city lights — buzzing like so many neurons — , clumsy focusing mechanism of camera lens, a veiled old woman who looks like Stevie Nicks who comes knocking at Betty’s place of temporary residence, a morose gangster negotiator who spews coffee from his mouth on a napkin, the light flicking on and off next to a cow skull nailed to a wooden arch, and etc. seem terribly simple and yet they are so evocative and foreboding of something deeper, darker, and dangerous. But then, techniques alone wouldn’t have done this trick. BLUE VELVET(much admired by some though not by me) and LOST HIGHWAY employ similar(and even fancier)techniques, but they aren’t as effective because their characters and narratives simply aren’t as compelling as the story of ‘Betty’ and ‘Rita’ in MULHOLLAND DR. We react more powerfully to every little trick or technique in MULHOLLAND DR. because we find the two characters — and even Adam Kesher and few others — so interesting, mysterious, amusing, and/or captivating. It’s like the same clothes, hat, and makeup will have an entirely different effect depending on who’s donning them. Audrey Hepburn was killer in the black dress and hat in BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S, but the same outfit wouldn’t have created the same effect with any other women. Despite the ‘auteur theory’, Orson Welles was right when he said characters and actors are crucial to whether a movie works or not. All the techniques and effects, however masterful or brilliant they may be, are essentially wardrobe of the characters and their emotional/psychological substance. LOST HIGHWAY and INLAND EMPIRE don’t really work because they’re Lynchian wardrobes without anyone interesting to fit them. To be sure, there are films like ERASERHEAD and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY where the characters are almost superfluous. The guy in ERASERHEAD is hardly a character in the conventional sense, and the main character of 2001 may actually be Hal the computer. Even so, the guy in ERASERHEAD has an unforgettable look and presence throughout. He may not ‘act’ out his characteristics, but his features suit the material perfectly. And David Bowman, though not the most exciting or engaging person, does radiate with intelligence, courage, and determination, with cool under duress.

Though ‘cinephiles’ and cultural intellectual types often praise ‘avant-garde’ and ‘unconventional’ works, time and time again it’s seems to be the case that the most profoundly affecting and effective ‘experimental’ works tend to have at their core something that is humanly recognizable and accessible. It’s like the best sauces and spices need something real and substantive to be applied on. Not surprisingly then, Alain Resnais’ MURIEL is a far greater work than JE T’AIME JE T’AIME and some others. MURIEL applies experimentation on characters and subjects rife with real emotions of human/historical experience whereas it’s difficult to get much worked up about the abstract emotions of JE T’AIME JE T’AIME that traipse through card-board characters. Supposedly, the latter work has to do with grief over a man’s lost wife, but we don’t believe in any of the characters. Likewise, I didn’t see anyone in BLUE VELVET as anything other than a cartoon character. And I still haven’t bothered to see WILD AT HEART which just sounds stupid. And LOST HIGHWAY lost me. And INLAND EMPIRE seemed like Lynch goofing around with a home movie. As Francis Ford Coppola demonstrated with ONE FROM THE HEART, directorial experimentation isn’t enough to make any movie. A movie needs a compelling subject and characters and story/situation. And Lynch really found one with MULHOLLAND DR., which along with ERASERHEAD, has elevated his name to the pantheon of great film artists.

The Need for Homo Shame as well as ‘Gay Pride’

Individual sense-of-self is often at odds with the social/collective sense-of-community. One could feel pride in something as an individual, but society might officially deem it as shameful. Or one could feel ashamed of something as an individual, but society might deem it as something worthy of pride. (In ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, Billy Bibbit is cheered on for his sexual adventure by fellow inmates, and it becomes a point of pride. But when Nurse Ratched mentions how his mother might feel about it, he’s overcome with great shame. In pride and shame, it seems like Billy is responding to the approval or disapproval of others as he lacks a strong sense of self.) Sometimes, the individual could be right(or at least more right), and sometimes, society could be right(or more right). When that idiot Amanda Marcotte who writes for Slate had sex with a porn ‘actor’ and then bragged about it at work the next day, most of her co-workers weren’t enthused(though not exactly disapproving either; they were mostly indifferent). They didn’t high-five her about something she claimed to be so proud of. (By the way, if she’s such an independent-minded maverick, why did she feel a need to seek the stamp of approval by the community of her peers and then bitch about it when it wasn’t forthcoming?) In many cases, what someone is very proud of as an individual could be dismissed or disapproved by the larger community or official/dominant institutions. This has been very true in the field of arts & entertainment. An artist, writer, film-maker, actor, musician, or choreographer may be very proud of his/her work, but the critical community might mock or dismiss it, and the public might either ignore it or find it shameful and stupid. One man’s pride is another man’s shame.
Anyway, it’d be ridiculous to force people to share one’s sense of pride. If a film-maker thinks he made the greatest movie of all time but critics and/or the public think otherwise(to put it mildly), then there’s a huge discrepancy between the film-maker’s sense of pride and the larger community’s sense of shaming(that deems the work as something a sane and sensible person should be ashamed of). For all I know, Terrence Malick may think TREE OF LIFE is one of the greatest films ever made — if not the greatest — , but I think it’s shameful waste of imagination and talent(that Malick once possessed and still may possess but is being wasted due to megalomania). Malick and his defenders have no power and no right to enforce his own view of the movie on the rest of us. Of course, there are nutjob critics like N.P. Thompson who were so reverent about Malick’s THE NEW WORLD that they sounded off as if they wanted to force the world to agree with them... or else. (SHOAH by Claude Lanzmann is another film that everyone in the cinephile community is force-shamed into admiring. Pauline Kael got a lot of hell — even from her admirers — for finding much of it turgid, boring, and self-important. Her reputation just barely saved her, but it’s possible that a lesser critic might have been shamed, fired, and blacklisted for similar opinions.) As we are accustomed to living in a free society, we don’t believe anyone has the right to force us to like or hate something. We don’t want to live in an Emperor-Wears-No-Clothes scenario where the people of the community are under pressure to praise everything about the emperor, even when he is virtually naked and ridiculous-looking. But there have been many unfree societies where the rulers could force the populace agree with the official truths. If Stalin liked something, you better have liked it too. If he applauded something, you better applaud it. If he didn’t applaud, you better be very careful about applauding. If Mao felt self-pride about something he said(no matter how ludicrous it might have been), you better agree with the Great Helmsman and applaud wholeheartedly. In an unfree society, the pride of rulers becomes the official pride of the masses who really have no choice. If you disagree and counter that what the rulers deem as ‘proud’ is really shameful, you can end up in the Gulag. You can be mind-tortured via ‘re-education’ and forced to love Big Brother. An unfree society imposes its notions of pride on everyone. So, if Stalin was proud to be the all-powerful and all-wise ruler of the USSR, you had no choice but agree with the official cult of pride. Same with Mao. If Hitler liked a certain style of art, you better like it too. Leni Riefenstahl in the documentary film about her life and career said she was disappointed with Hitler’s artistic tastes(deemed as kitschy by her), but she kept her views to herself since Hitler was officially the visionary genius of Germany. If Hitler was proud of his artistic tastes/vision, you better agree, at least if you wanted any kind of successful career options in Nazi Germany. Those who were openly critical of Hitler’s cultural policy might not be imprisoned, exiled, or executed, but the chances of his or her success in attaining elite status in Nazi Germany would have dimmed considerably.

Today, in places like Cuba and North Korea — the two last communist holdouts — , people are still expected to agree with the official cult of pride as determined by the rulers. So, Cubans are still expected to hail Fidel Castro as one of the greatest people of all time. They are required to feel proud as Cubans-led-by-great-leader-Fidel. And if fat Kim thinks he’s hot stuff in North Korea — though, in reality, he’s just a stupid pig(apology to real pigs that are actually intelligent creatures) — , North Koreans better agree with his self-assessment because, otherwise, they can get in big trouble or even end up dead. Of course, children in both nations are drummed from an early age to worship their leaders and feel proud to be citizens of nations led by such towering geniuses(the kind the world has never seen). And their parents aren’t going to correct these idiocies taught in schools because the kids are also encouraged to rat on their parents(for incorrect thoughts), and that could spell big trouble for the entire family.
Fidel Castro - the Man Who Knows Everything
Kim Jong-Un - the Boy Who Eats Everything
In an unfree society, not only is the official cult of pride mandatory(and must be agreed upon, approved, and shared by all), but certain feelings of shame are not allowed. So, if an individual Russian during the Stalin Era felt shame in his participation in the communist order, he had to keep it to himself because an expression of shame could turn into a matter of life or death. (Of course, most people assent to authority for much less. Even the prospect of losing one’s job or the fear of being shunned will turn most people into jelly before the powers-that-be. Especially as the powers-that-be have the ‘dirt’ on everyone through extensive surveillance, even if one can legally/morally justify oneself on a particular issue, he can be destroyed on a host of other matters. Suppose someone stands firm and fights all the way against unjust abuse of power in America. Win or lose, suppose the powers-that-be havea record of his having opposed ‘gay marriage’. He can be turned into a non-person in the world of the urban Liberal gentry where most of the power, wealth, and privilege are concentrated. Power isn’t only about freedom but about reputation as all social orders are centered around taboos. One is free to oppose to ‘gay marriage’ by speech in America, but the attendant reputation is a destroyer for anyone seeking social elevation and promotion as ‘gay marriage’ has been turned into something sacrosanct by the Jewish elites. Today, most Liberals believe bakers ought to be sued and destroyed for not baking ‘gay wedding cakes’, and Conservatives are reluctant to come to the defense of bakers who stand firm on their convictions. The minds of most Americans are completely owned by dirty Jews who control and impose what is sacrosanct or taboo. As most people are mainly desirous of wealth, privilege, status, and popularity, they will do anything to be seek the approval of the powers-that-be. Most people are that weak and wussy when it comes to genuine moral principles. They go for privilege and status, and they justify their betrayal of truth by fooling themselves that they ‘evolved’ to a ‘higher truth’ when, in fact, the real motivating factor was lust for privilege and approval from the ‘better kind of people’. If most homos were untalented and living in trailer parks than associated with rich and powerful people, who would give a damn about ‘gay marriage’?)
Suppose Soviet authorities heard someone saying, "I feel shame as a Russian when I see my countrymen obey Stalin like cattle and lay ruin to their own heritage and culture." Such sincere feelings of shame borne of individual conscience would not be permitted. Or imagine a conscientious German during the Nazi era who openly declares that he’s ashamed to be German because Germans elevated a vulgar lunatic like Adolf Hitler to the position of supreme leader. Even if his shame is individualistic and his own, it would be disapproved and could get him in trouble. Imposed or coercive collective pride means that one isn’t allowed to feel/express shame in being a part of a community that one finds to be insane or evil. It’s like courageous Japanese individuals who expressed individual shame over Japan’s military aggressions in Asia would have been silenced, censored, or imprisoned during the militarist era. Though one’s assessment of pride and shame is subjective, true pride and true shame must operate on the individual level as a matter of personal conscience. If you feel pride or shame primarily out of social, political, or economic pressure, then you’re just one of the sheeple who lets others determine what is good and what is bad, what is worthy of pride and what is worthy of shame. There is no Real You since you just go with the flow. Joachim Fest’s father, as recounted in his son’s memoir NOT I, had a powerful individual sense of pride and of shame. Despite Nazi pressure, he was individually proud to have resisted the regime in his own personal way, however ineffective it turned out to be politically. And despite the maniacal collective hysteria of national/racial pride centered around Hitler’s cult of personality, Fest’s father felt individual shame as a German who witnessed his fellow countrymen surrender their critical faculty and moral compass in their mindless devotion to Hitler the sorcerer. Thus, his individual sense of pride and individual sense of shame were two sides of the same coin. He felt pride as a man who refused to comply with an evil system, and he felt shame as a member of a culture whose folks collectively lost their minds. He didn’t let the regime dictate to him what he should feel proud of and what he should feel ashamed of.
Of course, supporters of Hitler had some legitimate reasons for feeling proud to be part of the new Germany molded by Hitler. Indeed, had Hitler avoided World War II and concentrated on less risky ventures, he might have gone down as one of Germany’s greatest statesmen. Fest himself argues as much in his biography of Hitler, i.e. had Hitler stopped his aggressions after the annexation of the Czech Republic, he would have been seen as an equal of Frederick the Great and Bismarck. After all, evil men can do good things, and good men can do evil things. Circumstances could force evil men to restrain their radical nature or force good men to take drastic measures. Had Hitler been genuinely afraid of the forces aligned against him in 1939, he might not have invaded Poland and instead might have resigned himself to playing the role of respectable statesman. It’s like even psychopaths can lead perfectly respectable lives if they believe they won’t be able to get away with their crazy acts. Hannibal Lecter killed and ate people because he was certain he could outsmart everyone else(especially as he enjoyed the game of cat and mouse with other humans deemed as intellectual and ‘spiritual’ inferiors). But if Lecter had been genuinely worried about getting caught, he might have repressed his sickness and worked as a brilliant psychologist; he would have been regarded as a first-rate doctor and scholar(and for valid reasons).

In a free society, one’s sense of pride or shame is a personal matter. Even if the elites say something is shameful, you might think it’s worthy of pride. Even if the elites say something is worthy of pride, you might see it as a matter of shame. Even if the majority feels pride in something, you might see it as something shameful. Even if the majority associates something with shame, you might see it as a point of pride. You may be right, you may be wrong, but your freedom to think and feel as you choose is tolerated and/or respected.
But does such a free society really exist? Or are all societies defined by pressures, subtle and not-so-subtle, that more or less compel most people to agree with the official cult of shame or official cult of pride? Especially when the official rules of shame and pride remain constant over a long period, they become almost second nature to most people. Most people don’t think about them and assume that all right-thinking people must and do agree. It is when the rules begin to change that we start to take notice of how these rules really work. What had been regarded as timeless and absolute truths are suddenly destroyed or made elastic to accommodate views and values that go against the original meaning. Rules usually change because the nature of elite power changes, because the social structure of society changes, and because changing trends lead to different habits of mind. A time of transition from one set of taboos to another makes for interesting dynamics.
As a society becomes more liberalized, old truths and taboos began to weaken, and there’s an opportunity for individual freedom and personal conscience to come to the fore and rebel against established conventions. So far so good in the development of a free society. But as time passes and as the new elites consolidate their power, the window of freedom narrows. Though the rules have changed, the dominance of the new elites leads to the establishment of New Truths and New Taboos. This is why the golden age of personal freedom/conscience is always when old truths of conservatism gives way to new truths of liberalism. Conservatism is no longer powerful enough to enforce the Old Truth, and liberalism is, as yet, not powerful enough to enforce the New Truth. Within that window of opportunity, one is allowed a wide spectrum of expressions ranging from the right to the left. Unmoored from old dogmas but as yet unanchored to new ones. It is a time when society has room enough for both the Archie Bunkers and the Meatheads of the world. It’s like the 60s, 70s, and early 80s were the golden age of free speech. Old censoriousness as favored by social conservatives and political patriots no longer held sway in society, and things that once couldn’t be said could be said in areas of politics, culture, sex, and lifestyles. And just about every liberal was for unfettered free speech, and two or three generations grew up believing in free speech as an absolute necessity of a democratic society. But since the late 80s, the Liberal Jewish elites began to consolidate their power in all institutions, and they used their power and influence to raise new generations of kids to believe that ‘hate speech is not free speech’, which really means that Liberal Jews should determine what does and doesn’t constitute ‘hate’. Not surprisingly according to the Liberal Jew elites, Zionism isn’t ‘hate’ but white nationalism is.

It used to be that homosexuality wasn’t only illegal but regarded as a form of sickness(by the medical community), sin(by the religious community), and depravity(by the moral community on both the right and the left). In truth, homosexuality is what one might call a Natural Abnormality. It is abnormal and dysfunctional — it’s about ‘sex’ involving men indulging in fecal penetration and women indulging in mutual-vagina-mashing — , but most homos are born homo. To be sure, a social order can make straight males carry on with the cult of homosexual practice, especially as rite of passage. This was surely the case with Ancient Sparta. The vast majority of Spartan men were not naturally homosexual as only 2% of the population are born as fruitkins. But assboy-ship became a hallmark of the Spartan rite of passage to manhood. When straight males — especially boys — are compelled to indulge in such kind of unpleasant behavior, they certainly aren’t enjoying it. So, why did such practice continue on down the generations in Sparta? It’s because the culture of abuse repeats itself generation after generation. It’s like abused children are more likely to abuse their own children. It’s like people who were corporally punished as children are more likely to use physical punishment on their own children. Even though they didn’t enjoy the violence done to them in their childhoods, it has become second nature to their way of assessing the rules of life. Also, they’ve subconsciously come to feel that such violence, however unpleasant it may have been, contributed to building their character and making them tougher and stronger. It’s like men who’ve been to the military and survived boot camp(with all its hardships and abuses) feel a certain pride in having gone to hell and returned. Thus, to-hell-and-back-ism or what-doesn’t-break-you-makes-you-stronger-ism becomes part of the training manual for a social order.
There’s something within the human heart that feels, "I shall do unto others what was done to me." In English boarding schools, incoming freshmen were abused and demeaned by older classmates. Given the nastiness, you’d think they themselves would act nicer to future underclassmen once they themselves moved up the academic hierarchy. But when they became the upperclassmen, they pulled rank and the same stunts on younger classmates.
In a freer social order, some might rebel and break such a cycle of violence-intimidation-humiliation, but the English school system was all about tradition, order, and honor — and society-at-large was in awe of such traditions, especially as it was practiced within elite institutions themselves. So, younger classmates were expected to suffer in silence and show their mettle by stoically handling the abuse(and wait for their own turn to wield the rod one day). And even though they were shamed and belittled, they were made to feel pride in the fact that they weathered the blows and taunts. As British society was defined by hierarchy, class consciousness, and lower members of society tipping their hats and saying "aye guv’nor" to their social superiors, it was understood by most people that the proper thing was to just grin and bear it. Paradoxically, lower classmates were forced to act like cowering servile wimps, but in their grin-and-bear-it stoicism of accepting such servitude, they might also feel a certain courage of taking the blows and whips without complaint. And when they finally made it to senior-ship, they could feel pride of having made it through the wringer and survived. So, it was finally their turn to act like the nasty upper-classmates in the film IF by Lindsay Anderson. They had paid their dues.
If... directed by Lindsay Anderson
Dazed and Confused directed by Richard Linklater
But then, there’s no guarantee that a freer society with less class consciousness will necessarily be nicer and more ‘humane’. Consider the hazing scene in DAZED AND CONFUSED. And there’s all sorts of nasty ‘classroom-and-shower-room politics’ in American schools, though a movie like CARRIE is certainly an exaggeration(unless the school is full of Negroes, in which case, it’s nothing compared to what the jafro-jivers are capable of). Still, it’s a bigger problem in authoritarian societies like Ancient Sparta or traditional Britain with its rigid class/caste structure. Or in old China where young women were married into the families of their husbands. In essence, the young wife was kicked around as a slave of the mother-in-law who herself had undergone and survived the same ordeal. Needless to say, the young wife would eventually grow old and become a mother-in-law herself and treat her daughter-in-law like a dog.
So, it’s not difficult to understand why Ancient Spartans carried on with the rite of assboy-ship even though most men were not homo. They were ‘abused’ homosexually by older men, and they internalized such unpleasantness as a rite of passage in becoming a ‘real man’. Since they survived the ordeal from older men who buggered their hynies, it was their turn to bugger a new generation of young boys to turn them into ‘real men’ too. (It’s interesting how a lot of these instances of unpleasantness involved sexuality. Homosexual abuse was a factor in English school system as well, and it often involved non-homosexual men and boys. Perhaps, the process of going from childhood to adulthood is traumatic because of the sexual changes that happen in the body, emotions, & drives, and such Rites of Humiliation may serve as means by which the burgeoning sexuality is tamed and put in order. With Ancient Spartans, the rite of passage involving ass-buggering was not a case of sexual libertine-ism but a matter of mandatory requirement. And there was much sexual taunting and shaming — of various nature — in the English school system. In the film IF... by Lindsay Anderson, a teacher is shown pinching and twisting the nipple of a boy who fails to provide the correct answer. And in the case of old China, young women were forced to suppress their sexuality and focus on familial duties. They were, of course, expected to have sex but only to provide a male heir than for any sexual pleasure or fulfilment.
The transition from childhood to adulthood is dramatic in both sexes. Boys start realizing that their balls produce jism that demands to be shot out all over the place. This is why SPIDERMAN is like pop culture Kafka-Freudianism. Not only does some guy turn into an insectodean creature, but he’s shooting white stuff all over the place from the masturbatory flick of the wrist. It’s like he’s cumming all over the city. David Lynch’s ERASERHEAD is about how inside every man is a jism-producing factory that keeps on cranking out spermic eel-like creatures.
And then you have girls who, in budding into womanhood, start bleeding from their pooters(though some say ‘cooters’) on a monthly basis. It’s all very gross if you think about it, which is why the pig-blood scene in CARRIE resonated so powerfully with young female viewers in 1976. (When I was in elementary school, girls of all ages couldn’t stop talking about it even though almost none of them saw it until it finally came on TV.) It’s as if heaven-as-hell menstruated on Carrie. If boys, in turning into men, begin to feel more aggressive as if a bundle of vipers are growing inside their balls and struggling to burst out and conquer the world; girls, in turning into women, feel as if they have a hog inside their belly that wants to be slaughtered and bled by a big hammer that would be the pud. Such urges and expressions/repressions seem gross and ghastly, which is why they make interesting subjects for horror or cult films by the likes of David Lynch, David Cronenberg, Brian DePalma, and John Carpenter.
London Slums
Though we modern folks often mock people in the past for their panics about sex and human biology, we need to understand that things were far less hygienic in the past. People lived far closer to bodily fluids of all kinds: female blood, men’s jism, animal body parts, feces, urine, and etc. And disease was rife, and sexual licentiousness often led to sexual diseases like syphilis that weren’t only incurable but drove people mad and killed them in horrible ways. It was a time when tuberculosis and other diseases were quite common even among the privileged. As dirt, grime, filth, and diseases were everywhere and as medicine had a long ways to go to come up with cures, behavior centered around fear and restraint mattered a great deal. Wrong kind of behavior could make one very sick. One wrong sexual encounter, and a person could ruin his or her life.
Also, it was a time when even rich folks didn’t have modern plumbing. Even the president of America took a shit in a commode. Abraham Lincoln got up every morning and squatted over a bowl in his bedroom and unloaded his feces and urine. And many folks disposed of shit and piss in rather unsavory ways. In many streets in France, many people just dumped the offal out the window. And as horses were the main means of transportation, there was manure all over the streets. And there were feral dogs with rabies. And of course, rats were everywhere.
In such a world, people were bound to be more ‘panicked’ and ‘repressive’ about human behavior. Even in rich families with access the best medical care, it wasn’t unusual for many children to die of diseases. Also, death in childbirth was far more common for women and babies. Since women in the past had more kids than women do today, there was a good chance that they would die of complications during childbirth. Indeed, a common misfortune mentioned in novels of the 19th and early 20th century involves women dying from giving birth. Ernest Hemingway’s most famous novel, THE FAREWELL TO ARMS, is about a woman dying while giving birth — and the kid is stillborn. As deaths from childbirths are far rarer today(especially with easy availability of birth control pills and abortion), something like Hemingway’s sad novel would be less believable if set in our times. (But maybe we still hanker for such tragic depths, and this may explain the explosion of the Orpheus-and-Eurydice narratives in films like SHUTTER ISLAND, INCEPTION, MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, and etc. Since women don’t die in real life, we have them die beautifully in movies.) So, we should be more understanding of the past instead of dismissing people back then as hopelessly panic-stricken or repressed or whatever. Effective cures for sexual diseases were still in the future. Condoms were not widely available, and there was no birth control pills. And the means by which women controlled their menstrual flow was far less effective then than now. Today, any woman can drive her car to the nearest drug store and buy any amount of tampons and such stuff. And disposable baby diapers are readily available to all, and garbage is regularly picked up and removed from residential, business, industrial, and recreational spaces. But things weren’t so clean and hygienic in the old days. A woman could be working in the fields and suddenly have blood flow down between her thighs. A baby would shit, and the same cloth/napkin would have to be cleaned over and over. And the fouled water from washing could be just dumped anywhere as there was no indoor plumbing. It was like the conditions of poverty seen in THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY. So, naturally, there were more taboos and repressions about human behavior since proper behavior might offer people with some degree of protection from the filth in the air, water, and in their own bodies trying to come out as urine, feces, blood, sweat, and etc. Today, many people shower everyday, but even people in the 1950s didn’t shower regularly, at least by our standards. (Ironically, even though social taboos and repressions served to protect people from indulging in wanton behavior that might lead to disease and/or death, they could sometimes makes things worse by sanctifying certain behavior via spiritual cosmology. India is famous for this. No sane person should bathe in the filthy Ganges, but Hindus see it as sacred, and therefore, millions go bathing in what is essentially an open sewage river; some even drink the water. Taboos can also be anti-rational and resist scientific advancement in medicine and hygiene. Also, especially in regards to sex, taboos can perpetuate ignorance about certain bodily functions that men and women need to know about in order to avoid dangers. Though sexual taboos exist to protect people from sexual problems, they can sometimes exacerbate the problems by silencing open discussion of urgent issues. The HIV problem in India is partly the result of socially coercive silence on the matter because official morality would have Indians believe that everyone is acting properly and not indulging in sexual practices such as prostitution. So, liberals have urged sexual education in schools. Not because they want to sexualize children from an early age but to inform the children about the truth and dangers of sex. But this also comes with a danger because once the discussion of sex is rendered casual and open, it can affect the culture as a whole to drop its hang-ups about sex. One result of the openness of sexual discussion/discourse is people being more informed about their decisions on sex, which is a good thing. The other result is a culture flooded with stuff like SEX AND THE CITY, GIRLS, and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES that have ‘pornified’ the mainstream and put forth the prostitute-style as the sexual ideal. So-called ‘hook-up culture’ is a vile thing.)
Indeed, if people in the last several decades became more relaxed and libertine about sexual matters, it had something to do with how our scatological nature/content became more ‘repressed’ through commercial products like disposable diapers and tampons, widespread plumbing, antibiotics, and all sorts of other devices and contraptions. For our behavior to be freed, our fluids and waste material had to be better hidden and industrially ‘repressed’.
It’s like Steven Pinker’s idealized present in BETTER ANGELS OF OUR NATURE was made possible by vast improvements in the efficiency and coordination of violence. For example, the modern means of killing and slaughtering animals, fishing the oceans, chopping down trees, dismantling entire mountains for minerals, drilling holes to suck out oil, and etc. have improved to such extent that there’s more goods for everyone(despite huge growth in human population) than in anytime in the past. When the means of violence were less efficient, people led tougher lives, and they were hungrier, thirstier, and wearier. If you wanted meat, you yourself would have to kill a rabbit and skin it — like the kid eventually does in KINGS OF SUMMER. Or you might have to take a sledgehammer and strike a sheep, pig, or cow in the head. At the very least, you’d have to twist off a chicken’s neck. But as our industrial means of killing and slaughtering is so efficient, it produces tons of meat for everyone. As our agricultural methods can plant and harvest produce from vast fields — and agriculture is a form of violent war on nature to grow food products desired by humans and livestock — , even poor people grow fat and feel satiated with full bellies.
Likewise, the improvement and wider accessibility of medicine, plumbing, hygienic commercial products, treatments, and etc. have improved so greatly that we’ve grown more complacent about our biological functions. In a less modern society, we have to be mindful of when and where we took a dump and pee.
Dotter Woman Pooing Outdoors
In India, 50% of the people still shit and piss outdoors, which means if you don’t watch yourself, you could be stepping on doo-doo. (This is a problem even in some communities in America where slovenly pet-owners allow their dogs to shit all over and don’t clean up afterwards.)
In the West, conditions have improved so much that even HIV-positive homos can lead reasonably healthy and decent lives. Magic Johnson, homo or not homo, is still alive and doing well. Andrew Sullivan, the fruitkin who got HIV from serving as an assboy to homo Negroes, is alive and doing well too. Though AIDS hasn’t been cured, they’ve found ways to control its worst symptoms, and this particular medical advancement has turned a sure death sentence into a life-sentence, which isn’t so bad.
But, when there was no cure for HIV in the 80s and much of the 90s, panic was the order of the day in the homo community, and rightfully so. (Of course, much of this has been whitewashed, and the Narrative would have us believe that only conservatives and hardcore Christians were in a panic/paranoid mode. Not true. It was the homo community that was most panicked because so many homos were dropping dead like flies. Furthermore, accusing the Right of ‘sexual panic’ is disingenuous because Liberals also accuse the Right of sexual indifference. You can’t have it both ways. On the one hand, Liberals say conservatives were flipping out during the AIDS crisis instead of being cool-headed and rational. But then they say conservatives were ‘indifferent’ and ‘uncaring’ instead of being impassioned about finding a cure. Same thing with this thing called ‘rape culture’. On the one hand, Liberals say conservatives are too uptight and repressed about sexual matters. They mock TWILIGHT movies for being ‘old-fashioned’ and repressive. But these same people say white college ‘conservatives’ — especially those in fraternities in southern universities — are totally out of control and whipping their dicks out to rape every college freshman girl. So, which is it? Are conservatives too uptight about sex or too wild & crazy? Were conservatives in the 80s too panicked or too indifferent about the AIDS problem? Needless to say, it’s Jews who use their immense media power to denigrate conservatives.)
Though Liberals, in their mindless worship of homos-as-holy-victims, have tried to whitewash homo ‘sexual’ behavior(that was indeed the main cause for the AIDS epidemic in the ‘gay community’) and blame the problem on ‘Reagan Era Indifference’, the fact is that people on the Right pleaded with the homo community to face the reality and act more responsibly: Either stop buggering one another in the ass or use condoms or be careful whose ass you boof. But, too many reckless homos gave the middle finger to Middle America, and they went about buggering one another all night long all over the place with all sorts of people. The fact that even homos of somewhat ‘conservative’ bent like Andrew Sullivan and Allan Bloom contracted HIV suggests that homos were into major buggering all around. If even ‘respectable’ homos act this way, just imagine how the more flamboyant homos were acting. They were boofing one another like crazy. Indifference or even hatred of homos didn’t spread HIV. I can be in the same room with a bunch of fruitkins and tell them I don’t care about them and even hate them. As long as they don’t bugger one another like lunatics, they will not get HIV. My feelings about them have nothing to do with their contracting the disease. But in another scenario, suppose I tell them that I care about them and suppose they bugger one another like crazy(and one of them happen to be HIV-positive); the chances are they’re all going to be infected with the illness. How I feel about homos has nothing to do with homos getting HIV. It’s like it doesn’t matter how I feel about Herpes. People will get it or won’t get it on the basis of their individual actions. Homos demanded the right to boof one another like crazy, and they paid the price for doing so because fecal penetration is a one helluva way to spread all sorts of filth and disease. So, the reason for the AIDS epidemic in the homo community had everything to do with ‘gay’ behavior of reckless ass-boofery. And such reckless was all too common. Roy Cohn was a Conservative Jew homo, but he got HIV. Worse, even when he knew he was HIV-positive, he buggered other homos. The leftist scholar Michel Foucault did the same thing. He continued to boof other homos despite the fact that he knew he was HIV-positive. Did Reagan force men like Roy Cohn, Michel Foucault, Andrew Sullivan, and Allan Bloom to go around boofing and getting boofed in the ass? Even if the funds for AIDS research in the 80s had been doubled, effective medical treatments would have been in the indefinite future. No amount of money could have found some magic cure there and then(and even today, AIDS can be controlled but not cured). It’s like despite the tons of money spent on breast cancer research, there’s still no magic cure, which is why Angelina Jolie opted for radical mastectomy. But homos, in their hissy-pissy, bitchy-witchy, tutti-fruity, and ta-ta manner, are incapable of facing up to the music and blaming themselves for the very problem that they caused. They are like old aristocrats who messed things up in their domain but always blamed it on others. Homos remind us of Jews like Jordan Belfort and Jack Abramoff who pulled every dirty stunt in the book but still try to blame others for what they’ve done. It’s like World Jewry ruined Russia after the fall of communism by aiding Russian Jewish oligarchs to swallow up most of the wealth. But do Jews take any responsibility for what they’ve done?
Indeed, why is it so difficult for liberal democracy to work in many nations? Because when they make a go of it, globalist Jews exploit the new freedom in that country to take over the media, banks, and even the government. How could Russian democracy work for the Russian masses when World Jewry colluded with Russian Jews to take over everything? Many African and Arab nations are understandably cynical about Western rhetoric about ‘democracy’ since it often involves Jews using their money and might to slip in Jewish influence along with the so-called ‘democracy’. The so-called ‘liberation’ of Iraq may have removed tyrant Hussein, but it gave Neocon Jews an opportunity to mess up Iraq via sectarian strife so that it will never rise again as a regional power. Though Iran is ruled by a miserable Islamic regime, it’s also true that certain ‘pro-democracy’ groups are bankrolled by Jews who would love to shove ‘gay marriage’ onto Iranians. Today, much of American pro-democratic rhetoric in Africa has to do with ‘gay rights’. Now, I can understand the West asking Africans to go easier on homos and to deal with violence against ‘gays’, but who the hell wants a democracy where bakers can be sued and fined and imprisoned for not baking ‘gay wedding cakes’? Who wants their children in fifth grade to be taught in schools about the joys of ‘anal sex’?
Modern Toilet - Wonder of the Age
Todd Bless the Plumber
Anyway, because we live with modern technology and amenities that can control, cure, reverse, or hide all the questionable things we do, we tend to be more easy-going about our behavior. We need not worry about garbage since the truck comes to pick it up and dispose of it. We need not worry about fecal matter since we merely need to flush the toilet. We need not worry about sweat and grime since we can shower everyday — and some people shower twice or more times a day. Women need not worry so much about ‘the period’ since it’s easy to carry appropriate products, and there are washrooms all over the place. We can be less ‘panic-stricken’ and ‘repressed’ about our social behavior because so much of our biological/scatological realities are ‘repressed’ and ‘hidden’ by our technology.
Indeed, we would be less panic-stricken about death as well if it could be reversed, as in EDGE OF TOMORROW. We fear death because it’s irreversible. If we fall off a cliff, it’s death for sure. We can die in a car crash. We can be shot to death. So, we still have great fears about death. If a loved one dies, there’s nothing we can do to bring him or her back to life. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett can spend all their money to revive a dead mouse, but it never live again. Death is sure and certain. So, death still frightens us like diseases of yesteryear once frightened us. But suppose there’s a reverse-death machine that can easily revive the dead. Suppose in a fit of anger, I shot someone. I would feel panicked about the arrest, prosecution, guilt, and conviction. And people who love the victim will be filled with sadness. But suppose I can push a button and bring back the person back to life. Suppose we had the power of Superman to turn the clock back as he did in the original movie where Lois Lane was brought back to life. That way, death would no longer frighten us so badly. It would merely be just another ‘problem’ that we can control, cure, or reverse. And murder would no longer be such a terrible crime since the murdered could be restored back to life. Would that be better for our morality? If indeed every dead person could easily be brought back to life, what would most of us think of murder? Why would murder be so bad when resurrection would be assured of the victim? If we had a reverse-death machine, the moral consequences of death would be lightened, even trivialized. Murder would not lead to irreversible death but only to a process of ‘healing’ whereby the dead person will be made to live again. It’s like in ZARDOZ where the Eternals cannot be killed permanently. Remember when Zed kills one of the Eternals in the opening part of the film. The Eternal, shot by Zed, seems to fall to his death, but he is reconstituted and alive again. So, murder isn’t a grave matter in the world of the Eternals. The creation of a reverse-death machine would be miraculous. How wonderful if a murder victim could be brought back to life. But then, if the murdered can so easily be ‘cured’, the moral burden of murdering someone would lose its meaning and substance.

In some ways, the advancement of science and technology makes us less moral since many of the problems we cause can be fixed, reversed, or controlled though modern means of convenience. Sexual misbehavior was weighted with greater moral sanctions and taboos in the past because the consequences were so grave and obvious. Women could easily become pregnant with the lack of contraceptives. So, the connection between personal behavior and moral choice could not be ignored. One had to mindful of the consequences of the loss of self-control. Today, women can indulge in all sorts of naughty behavior and just rely on pills, devices, and even abortion to reverse the consequences of their actions. Guys can sleep around and get all sorts of diseases, but then go to the doctor to be treated for VD. Even if VD cannot be cured, it can be controlled. Even HIV is now controllable in the West, therefore homos can relax once again about boofing each other in the ass. And as America is a rich nation, much of bad behavior can be alleviated through welfare, government programs, and increased benefits. In the past, nearly everyone had to work very hard to have enough to eat. With tons of excess food produced every year and with the Fed printing record amounts of money — and with cheap labor in Mexico, China, and India to offer products and services at depressed prices — , we don’t have to worry about inflation that usually accompanies massive printing of money. If in the 19th century some jive-ass Negroes and idiot ‘white trash’ acted like today’s idiot blacks and whites, they’d starve pure and simple. Back then, they had to be mindful about finding work, growing food, or doing something that served their needs of survival.Today, a jive-ass Negro can mess up in school, wear his pants down low, act like an ape, hump a lot of ho’s, and be a total idiot, but the government will take care of his needs. Just look at the useless scum of Ferguson, Missouri.
Jafro-Jivers Acting Negro-ish
Because of modern economy and technology, there’s plenty to go around, and even total idiots can be taken care of. Indeed, we are told that it’s a moral imperative to take care of those ‘poor’ people. But because today’s underclass no longer really suffer the consequences of their actions — since they are guaranteed the basics of survival and more no matter what they do — , the moral culture suffers as a whole. But for how long can such madness be sustained?
And it’s not just Negroes or ‘white trash’. Wall Street is packed with people with fancy degrees from top business schools. Many are as venal and unscrupulous as they’re smart and ambitious. But they needn’t worry much about ‘moral hazard’. Since the Great Depression, the US government has come up with new ways to handle economic crises, and in many ways, these improvements were necessary and for the good. But they also had a morally corrosive effect because the sharks on Wall Street now feel that they will be taken care of by the government(bought and paid for by Wall Street to a large measure) no matter how badly they mess up the economy through unfettered orgies of greed. If anything, the very Wall Street sharks who’d done so much to tank the economy in 2008 reaped the most rewards since the Recession. Under George W. Bush and Barack Obama, one needn’t be morally responsible to buy homes, morally responsible to make loans, and morally responsible to buy the loans, bundle them together with bad loans, and sell them all over all the globe. Lots of Wall Street Jews did this, but almost no one went to jail. If anything, the government bailed them out, and they are now richer than ever. We can pat ourselves on the back for having in place a system that managed and survived a great crisis, but doesn’t such a system also encourage us to be less moral since problems of immorality can be reversed, controlled, or contained(by means that some would call unethical to put it mildly)? Suppose Hitler had a button in 1941 that could reset everything like a video game if things didn’t go well. Like the Tom Cruise character in EDGE OF TOMORROW, Hitler could have done the GROUNDHOG-DAY-THING over and over until he got it ‘right’. The problem is not being offered a second chance. The problem is never having to learn the lesson since the ‘system’ will always take care of you or contain(or ‘correct’) your mistake. Worse, in the long run the ‘system’ could encourage people to act ever more irresponsible. The problems are compounded when special interest groups and hostile minorities dominate society. For example, in a sane society, girls would be instructed on the danger of fecal penetration, i.e. it greatly increases the chance of anal cancer, spread of disease, the distended bunghole syndrome, and etc. And straight guys would be instructed that it’s not healthy to have their penises smeared with fecal matter. But because Jews control America and since homos are the favored group of Jews(and since homo men indulge in fecal penetration), our society fails to instruct girls about the gross dangers of indulging in fecal penetration. Why, such information might be ‘homophobic’. Wall Street sharks brought down the economy, but when the Bush administration allowed Lehman Brothers to fail, the Jews didn’t blame themselves. No, they blamed the Bush administration for not doing enough. And to panic the government into acting, Wall Street Jews made the economic panic even worse. And they cleverly supported Obama to give the impression that a new kind of leader was coming into Washington to clean up the culture of greed. So, what did Obama do? He bailed out the big Jewish banks. Homos and Jewish bankers act the same. Homos spread HIV all over in the 1980s by spreading filth all around through fecal penetration, but they blamed the epidemic on Reagan’s ‘indifference’ than on their own actions. According to the homo narrative, the problem lay with what Reagan didn’t do than with what the homos did do, which was stick penises in the holes that doo-doo. It’s like someone burning down his own house and then complaining that the fire truck didn’t arrive soon enough. Even if the complaint is valid, why did he burn down the house in the first place? Such kinds of questions are anathema to hissy pissy homos and pushy-wushy Jews. Jewish bankers in the 2000s risked the entire global economy by spreading the filth of toxic derivatives all over the world, but when banks like Lehman Brothers began to topple, Jews blamed the government of indifference and not acting fast enough. Of course, the government was also to blame, especially since George W. Bush gave the green light on the crazy home loans in the name of creating a ‘ownership society’. If anything, Bush II was filled with so much compassion for non-whites without homes that he backed the homes-for-deadbeats program with Tex-Mex gusto. Even so, Wall Street was the main enabler of the crazy economic scheme. Also, since the late 1990s, it was telling the government and lobbying politicians to butt out and let Wall Street do as it pleases without much oversight or regulation. Wall Street went into bathhouse orgy mode as it wallowed in filthy finance capitalism. It did as it pleased, but when the shit finally hit the fan, it was bitching and whining that Bush II wasn’t doing enough to fix the problem that it created in the first place. It was like homos demanding that they be allowed to boof one another like crazy and then blaming Conservatives for not having done enough to find an instant cure for AIDS, especially so that homos could go on boofing one another like crazy as if there’s no tomorrow. Both homos and Wall Street lunatics sound like Albert Brooks’ character in LOST IN AMERICA. His wife blew their entire saving on gambling, but he wants the money back. He’s just some hapless boomer with midlife crisis, but today, entire industries and groups are shameless in their demand to do as they please and in their bitching that others or the ‘system’ clean up the very problems they’ve caused through their own excessive behavior. "We want our money back." It’s not "I did it my way, and I will suffer the consequences", but "I did it my way, and you better deal with the consequences." In schools, black kids act up and get suspended more, but neither they nor their parents are blamed. No, the blame is on ‘society’ or the ‘system’ for the ‘racism’ of punishing black kids disproportionately(while conveniently ignoring the fact that black kids disproportionately act out of order).
In many cases, many Americans — even or especially white Liberals — know all about the foulness of our (im)moral climate, but they have to maintain the political coalition, and since blacks are a key group(for both demographic and symbolic reasons) in the Democratic Party, their ‘noble victim’ shtick has to be sustained(even against all evidence that blacks are hardly saints and angels). Or consider illegal immigration. Americans didn’t force all those people to come here illegally. Americans didn’t force them to have kids in America. Illegals did so by breaking American laws. Yet, the moral burden is placed on white Americans for fixing the problem. Of course, the solution would have been simple. Send the illegals back and secure the border. But for some reason, that would be violating the ‘rights’ of illegal aliens to break American laws. So, just as homos did as they pleased but then burdened society with the blame for the problem and just as Wall Street Jews fleeced the entire world but then burdened society with the obligation to fix the economic mess, illegals caused the problems by breaking-and-entering in America but then burdened American society with the responsibility to solve the problem of their illegal status. But Americans didn’t forcibly drag them here illegally. They came here illegally. They broke the rules. Because America is very rich and bountiful, it’s been able to accommodate, forgive, and even encourage all such bad behavior. So, even though homos did so much to spread AIDS all over, they are now celebrated and even worshiped as a ‘race’ of ‘angels’. So, even though Jews have done more than any other group to steal from the world economy and mess up things in the Middle East and Ukraine, they are admired and praised as the godly race. And even though illegals broke American laws and leeched off America, we are told that amnesty is like Emancipation of slavery. If America were a poor dysfunctional nation, such lunacies couldn’t be indulged since there would be no way of paying for them. But because America can afford to indulge such lunacies, the moral climate of America gets worse and worse. Jews, homos, Negroes, and illegals get more blatant, nasty, arrogant, narcissistic, and unreflective in their behavior and demands.

Jews especially have a culture of evading all responsibility for their foulness. Consider how a lot of Jewish radicals were involved in espionage for the Soviet Union in the 1930s and 1940s. A network of Jewish spies including the Rosenbergs funneled atomic secrets to Josef Stalin. There were many Jewish radicals, communists, and fellow-travelers working to subvert the American system, send secret documents to the Soviet Union, and, of course, pull every dirty trick in the book to aid and abet Israel’s campaign of ethnic cleansing and terror against Palestinians. But Jews took no responsibility for their deeds and blamed all the problems on the anti-communist ‘paranoia’ and ‘hysteria’. Given the fact that so many communists and fellow-travelers had infested the US government, you’d think the real problem was that the anti-communists weren’t vigilant enough. After all, the secrets of the Bomb — as well as tons of other documents — did end up in Stalin’s hands. Oftentimes, thanks largely to Jewish agents, Stalin knew more about what was happening in the US government than American politicians did. But Jews take no responsibility. They take no blame. Instead, they just play victim and blame the ‘right’ for ‘paranoia’ and ‘hysteria’.
It’s no wonder that Jews and homos saw eye-to-eye about politics in the 1980s and 1990s.
Both groups think and behave alike. They are hissy, arrogant, hideous, and vile. They are narcissistic and self-righteous and see themselves as the center of the world. Tim Cook of Apple thinks he’s blessed by God because he has a ‘sexual’ predilection for sucking men’s cocks and having other men pump him in the ass. And of course, Tony Kushner the homo Jew conflated the story of the Rosenbergs with the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. Never mind it was Rosenbergs who gave Stalin the Bomb. Never mind that AIDS spread like wildfire because homos were out of control. Instead, both Jewish leftists and homo perverts play victim and say they were victims of right-wing ‘paranoia’ or ‘indifference’. Jews, homos, and Negroes demand that we never object to whatever they do, and so, they indulge in various forms of financial fraud, sexual lechery, and criminality, but if things go badly due to their excesses, WE are to blame for all the problems resulting from them. Jews messed up Russia after the fall of communism, but notice how they blame everything on Putin, even though the neo-oligarchic system was put in place by Jews before Putin amassed sufficient power to rein in the oligarchs to some degree. Jews, homos, and Negroes are vile groups that should never be heeded or trusted. Sure, like any other groups, they have their own histories of suffering and tragedies, but we should never let them own the morality narrative on account of their suffering since they feel zero sympathy for all the peoples who’d suffered from their actions. Since when have Jews ever apologized or atoned for what they’ve done? What have homos ever done to atone for their long history of collaborating with the oppressive elites all around the world? What have Negroes ever done to apologize for all the misery they’ve created over the ages and in all parts of the world through their thuggery and madness?

Anyway, the true pride and true shame cannot be coerced. We can be pressured to feign false pride and false shame, but that would only indicate that the socio-political order in question is unfree. In Cuba, people are made to feign pride in being ruled by Castro. Under Ceausescu’s regime in Romania, the masses were forced to feign pride at mass rallies. They had to pretend that they were living in a land of plenty and justice. And when the level of enthusiasm couldn’t be sustained, the regime used loudspeakers to add the sounds of applause. It was like adding laugh-tracks to TV comedy.
In the past, even homos who felt real pride in being homo were pressured to remain silent or were fired and blacklisted for daring to display pride in something that the official culture deemed as depraved. Back then, official culture had an elite component and a mass component, and both exerted great influence. Though liberals were dominant in elite positions — though not as much as Liberals are today — , much of America was still governed and defined by what might be called ‘community’ values rooted in family, ethnicity, tradition, religion, moral righteousness, and etc. And the ‘community values’ component of the culture was sufficiently powerful to elicit the respect of the liberal elites. It would have been crazy for the liberals elites to push something like ‘gay marriage’ in the 50s, 60s, or even 70s. Even at the height of the so-called ‘radical 60s’, much of America was powerfully governed by ‘community values’.
To be sure, liberals back then were not like Liberals today. Many, even most, liberals back then thought homosexuality was a sickness or perversion. Though more tolerant of homos than conservatives were, many liberals shared many of the moral and social assumptions of American conservatives. In terms of cultural habits, your average mainstream liberal in the 60s wasn’t all that different from an average mainstream conservative. The working men in HOFFA might be on the left economically, but their cultural values had nothing in common with what prevails among today’s urban gentry Liberals. Globalist Liberals revere Masha Gessen(who is like a dyke Ayn Rand) and endorse her vision of the future. Over 99% of American liberals would have found her demented and sick in decades past. Even many homosexuals would have been disgusted by her ilk. Today, Gessen-ism is the toast of the town in places like Washington D.C., San Francisco, New York, London, and etc.

Also, though Jews and homos were powerful among the liberal elites in the past, other groups were represented too, especially liberal white gentiles, and they stamped liberalism with some degree of mainstream values. But as time passed, Jews and homos took over the institutions of liberal elitism. And they increasingly felt little in common with ‘community values’ characterized by the tastes and assumptions of masses of white gentiles who tended to be relatively conservative(at least relative to the agenda of Jews and homos). If traditional liberalism was largely in sync with ‘community values’ — GRAPES OF WRATH is a leftist novel but strong on family values and humanist stoicism — , the neo-liberalism of the Jewish and homo elites found little in common with ‘community values’. (Traditional liberalism also favored ‘community values’ because blacks were seen as culturally backward and less sophisticated. Traditional liberals felt they must appeal to the common man/woman, and since the common man/woman wasn’t particularly well-educated, his or her decency was defined by something like ‘family values’. Consider Lorraine Hansberry’s play THE RAISIN IN THE SUN where the main character is a stout Negress who holds her family together with motherly virtues and faith in God. When her daughter acts too smart and says she doesn’t believe in God, she slaps her real good and compels her to say, ">"In my mother’s house, there is still God." Even the demon in THE EXORCIST would have run from the black mama’s fierce piety. The mama is no educated or cultured woman, but she has an intuitive and impassioned sense of right and wrong borne of experience, patience, suffering, hard times, and pride in work. And such folks were at the center of the traditional liberal imagination. Today, such a woman would be unwelcome in the Liberal community. Only if a chubby black guy puts on a dress and a blonde wig will he get any kind of love from today’s elite-effete urban gentry Liberals whose values are in sync with Gessen-ism. To be sure, the mama archetype of RAISIN IN THE SUN faded long before the rise of new Liberalism. When the Civil Rights Movement got started, many white folks put their faith and hopes in the noble black mama archetype. She may look like a big gorilla, but she has core values and basic decency. So, when white characters try to block the sale of the house in the play/movie, we can’t help sympathizing with the Negro family because the mama is such a good woman who done slapped her silly daughter yapping about there being no God — and I speak as an atheist. Also, as even traditional Liberals were afeared of Negro’s strength and power, they placed their hopes on Negro’s faith in Christianity as a dampener on Negro rage and wildness. The devout Negro who’s into God was preferable to wild-ass Negro into whiskey and guns. And this was also the appeal of MLK. He seemed so noble and saintly and godly. Little did white folks know that the punk was pulling a Trojan Horse or Brojan Horse trick. In time, the white liberal hope in the devout and decent Negro collapsed as cities began to burn in the 1960s. Negroes became wild and crazy, especially with the rise of sex, drug, and youth culture. Counterculture liberals supported the new black radicalism, but it blew up in their face as cities became inundated with urban blight and crime. So, what were new Liberals to do in the 80s and 90s? The devout mama archetype of RAISIN IN THE SUN was no more. A lot of blacks still went to church, but black churches had turned into boogie-woogie dance halls of apelike antics. As for the black radicals and allies, they just made a lot of noise without offering any constructive plan for Negro improvement. So, the new Liberalism fixated on immigration so that non-black arrivals would serve as buffer between whites and blacks. And new Liberalism favored homos, especially as homos could spearhead the gentrification — euphemism for driving-blacks-out — of cities.)
And yet, ‘community values’ defined the backbone of Middle Class America, and when radicals reared their crazy heads in the late 60s and early 70s, most of Middle America said NO, which is why Nixon won a landslide in 1972. Carter inched out a victory in 1976, but he benefited from the Watergate scandal and the colorlessness of Gerald Ford. Even with all the negatives against the GOP, the race was very close. In 1980 and 1984, Reagan won huge landslides. So, Middle America, the backbone of the American electorate, still preferred the idea of Mainstream Values over radical propositions. This was the case despite the fact that America by the late 70s and 80s had absorbed some of the attitudes and fashions that had emerged in the 60s, especially in relation to sex, drugs, and rock music. But as long as American liberalism was tagged with ‘radicalism’, it wasn’t going to win. This is where the lessons of Saul Alinsky sunk in. For the radicalism to be made acceptable to Americans, it would have to be sold as a form of Mainstream-ism. More crucially, Liberals realized that ‘community values’ and the ‘mainstream’ didn’t go very deep, i.e. most people, Conservative or Liberal, are vapid and shallow. What went by the name of ‘community values’ was more cosmetic than committed in its moralism. What the majority of Americans preferred was the appearance or semblance of moralism, righteousness, and normality than the real thing. So, if the abnormal could be packaged to look ‘normal’ & ‘decent’ and if the normal and decent could be packaged to look ‘extreme’, ‘odious’, ‘noxious’, & ‘divisive’, then a lot of people would favor the New Normal. It’s all in the packaging and selling. People are such pushovers.

Anyway, there was a time when homos were pressured to feel shame even when they, as free individuals, felt pride in their homosexuality. It would have been one thing if society, on the whole, deemed homosexuality to be shameful but nevertheless allowed homosexuals to exhibit individual pride. Instead, a homosexual, even upon expressing pride purely on an individual level, could be fired and blacklisted. And then for a time, there was freedom whereupon homos could express pride in their sexual orientation as individuals even if most of society found them perverted or weird. It was also a time when non-homos and anti-homos could express their conviction(of individual conscience or prejudice) that homosexuality is weird, putrid, or wrong, something to be ashamed of. But their disapproval no longer prevented homos from enjoying their individual freedom and rights as citizens. People could feel pride or shame about homosexuality based on their individual predilections, conscience, and preferences. And in the name of liberal democratic principles, this seemed the ideal arrangement for all involved. If individual homos indeed felt pride about being ‘gay’, they had the freedom to do so. They were no longer forced to hide their homosexuality or express shame about it. But then, no one was forced believe that homosexuality is something one should be proud of. No one was forced to praise homosexuality.
The Homo Style - They come to you nice and easy and 'plead' with you to support the 'gay' agenda. But it's really an OFFER YOU CAN'T REFUSE because if you say NO, homos will collude with Jewish elites to have you destroyed.
Today, we live in a very different society where all Americans are pretty much coerced to wave the ‘pride’ flag of homosexuality and transgenderism. And this coercion is applied not only to straight people and non-homos but on homos as well. After all, there are, even today, homos who feel ashamed of being homo, and there are transgender people who feel uneasy about being transgender. They don’t agree with the homo agenda that homosexuality is something one should feel proud of. Homo community denounces such homos as being akin to self-loathing Jews, and of course, Jews, the main allies of homos, agree. And such homos are rejected and endlessly harassed by other homos. It’s as if homos MUST feel proud of being homo. But is this justified? While expressions of ‘self-loathing’ may seem detestable to many people, isn’t it a matter of individual conscience and feeling? Tim Cook of Apple thinks that God blessed him with the desire to stick his penis into the fecal holes of other men. But some homos feel rather uneasy about the fact that they have weird ‘sexual’ tendencies, and such unease isn’t always religious or cultural. It’s a matter of individual conscience. I know this because I’ve known some homo people who, despite being Liberal and living in a wildly pro-homo environment, prefer to keep their homosexuality a secret because they honestly don’t feel at ease with it and aren’t proud of it. Though they want their anus to be pumped by other men’s puds and even though they want to suck dick, they find that stuff to be ‘wrong’ and putrid. It’s like some Evangelicals in the South might indulge in pornography and prostitution, but they still feel ashamed of it.
Now, why shouldn’t such people feel shame about their homosexuality if they really feel that way? And this applies to self-loathing Jews as well. According to most Jews, Norman Finkelstein is a ‘self-loathing Jew’, but he is honestly ashamed of the Jewish community complicity in the oppression of Palestinians. He finds the political exploitation of the Holocaust by the Jewish community to be contemptible. Agree or disagree with him, should he be denied work at a university — as he was at Depaul University due to pressure from powerful Zionist organizations — because he happens to feel shame about the Jewish community and how it aids & abets the inhumanity of Zionism as it is currently practiced against a powerless people, the Palestinians?
If it is wrong to force an individual homo to express self-shame when he really feels self-pride, isn’t it also wrong to force an individual homo to express self-pride when he really feels self-shame? Likewise, if it’s wrong to force an individual Jew to express self-shame when he really feels self-pride about his/her Jewishness, isn’t it also wrong to force an individual Jew to express self-pride when he really feels self-shame about his/her Jewishness?
This goes for a Japanese too. A Japanese far-rightist may feel a powerful sense of national pride, but should he have the power and means to force all Japanese to express a similar kind of pride even if they don’t agree with his feelings? A Japanese far-leftist may feel great shame about his country, but should he have the power and means to force all Japanese to express a similar kind of shame even if they don’t share his feelings? When pride or shame becomes a matter of collective coercion, the society in question is no longer free. Today, all German children are raised with coercive shame about Germany, indeed so much so that any German who exhibits any kind of virile pride in German identity, culture, and history is immediately suspect and even censured(and censored). According to the New German Narrative, all Germans must primarily feel shame, and if any pride is to be availed to Germans, it’s in their dutifulness in keeping the flame of shame alive. Germans are allowed to feel pride in committing racial/national suicide, but then, it’s a paradoxical kind of pride found on self-loathing shame. The harder a German works to dissolve his or her own Germanness, the more he or she is made to feel pride. It’s the pride of being a suicidal slave to World Jewry. Though what Germans did to the Jews during World War II was unspeakably horrible, what Jews are trying to do to Germany and rest of Europe is as evil because it means the demographic collapse and permanent destruction of the European race with all its glory, beauty, and dignity.
The evil of Jews seems less visible since Jews use the facade of ‘human rights’ and nice-sounding terminology like ‘inclusion’, ‘progress’, and ‘cosmopolitanism’, but the effect in coming years will be devastating. Furthermore, why is demographic invasion a good thing? Wasn’t the greatest Nazi evil the war against Russia? And what was that about? It was about the Lebensraum plan to displace Russian/Slavic people with Germanic/‘Aryan’ volks whose agenda was to reduce the native inhabitants to Russia into permanent slaves or serfs. Though there are some positive benefits from immigration, what is happening today in Europe must be called a massive invasion. Though some see it as just poor folks looking for a better life in the rich West, the fact remains that the gates were opened by the super-rich and super-privileged Jewish elites so that native whites will be swamped by masses of non-whites. Jewish elites do this because they want to play divide-and-rule forever among diverse groups of goyim.

True pride and true shame are individual matters. Some Christian individuals feel genuine pride in being Christian and in being part of the Christian tradition. They believe that the Christian community has every right to be proud of its history and accomplishments. Some Christian individuals feel genuine shame in being Christian and see Christian history as essentially one of betrayal. They, as ‘self-loathing Christians’, believe that Christians, for most of their history, have deviated from the teachings of Jesus Christ and behaved more like the agents of Satan. Therefore, they feel the main obligation of Christians is to feel shame about their history & identity and repent to the end of time for having failed Jesus, for having enslaved blacks, for not having stopped the Holocaust, and for having allowed ‘gay marriage’, presumably the #1 agenda of Jesus if you ask Liberals today. (For some reason, Christians feel no guilt or shame about the history of ‘cultural genocide’ against indigenous pagan folks of Europe, but then, I guess it’s okay to oppress and kill white folks of any stripe.) Anyway, if some nutball Christian individuals really feel that way, they should have the right to do so in a free society. We may disagree with them, but if that’s how they really feel about their faith and their moral obligations, who are we to prohibit them from doing so, let alone destroy their lives by having them fired and blacklisted? It’s like some fat people are proud to be fat, and some fat people are ashamed. It should be up to every fatso to decide if he or she is proud or ashamed to be a fatso. Fat folks may be a bunch of hippos, but they have the freedom to think and feel as they choose. And the same goes for the rest of us. If some non-fat folks think being fat is something to be ashamed of, that’s their honest opinion. If some non-fat folks think that fat people should be proud to be fat, that’s their business too. Jellybellies should have the freedom to decide whether they feel proud or ashamed, and they shouldn’t be penalized whatever their opinion may be. And we non-blimps should be free to size up fatness as a good or a bad. We shouldn’t be forced to condemn fatness or to praise fatness. That’s why we live in a free society. If a Frenchman in America feels proud to be French, fine. If he feels ashamed of being French, that’s fine too. If a non-French-American thinks France is most deserving of pride as a nation and culture, no problem. If a non-French-Americans thinks that France is a pompous-ass nation and that the French should feel ashamed for all the shitty things they’ve done throughout history, that’s fine too.

But, when it comes to Jews, Negroes, and homos, we are not allowed such freedom of opinion based on individual conscience, passions, preferences, experiences, and/or observations. All Jews, Negroes, and homos are pressured to fall in line and feel & display pride, righteousness, and more pride and righteousness. And the rest of us are pressured to conflate Jewishness with nothing but nobility, Negro-ness with nothing but wonderfulness, and homo-ness with nothing but sainthood. The dynamics behind this isn’t much different from what once prevailed in Nazi Germany and communist nations. And similar officially sanctioned mind-sets still prevail in Castro’s Cuba and North Korea. Though the West is still relatively a free place, on certain topics and subjects you better damn be careful because, even if they don’t send to you to Gulag or put a bullet in your head, you will be ruined in business, profession, and reputation by the Jew-run media, government, and court system that will come down hard on anyone who defies the Narrative or Narritivitz.

Suppose you feel that homos should have the right to pursue and succeed in professions. Suppose you collaborate with them at work with all the professionalism that is expected of you. But suppose on your twitter account, you say that you believe fecal penetration between homo men is gross and sickening. You will be targeted and fired. In the UK, you will even be arrested in the middle of the night and locked in prison. In the current order, all homos are required to feel pride in their homosexuality, and the rest of us are forced to either publicly praise homosexuality as something worthy-of-pride or shut the hell up. Indeed, even shutting-the-hell-up may not be enough as rallies, parades, gatherings, and mandatory meetings are organized whereby all politicians and professionals are defacto ordered to assemble in praise of homos. If you don’t attend, you could be targeted for future firing, just like a person in a communist nation who refused to attend communist rallies and parades came under suspicion. And even if you’re not outright targeted for destruction for refusing to attend pro-homo rallies, you will be marked as the ‘homophobe’, and various subtle and not-so-subtle means will be utilized to deny your promotion and contracts. Of course, they will come up with bogus excuses for shunning or demoting you, but then, it’s difficult to prove them wrong as anyone can cook up any excuse for doing or not doing something. It’s like there’s no law in the US government that says you MUST attend AIPAC rallies. But if a politician doesn’t, the Jewish elites will spread the word among themselves that the politician is lacking in proper ‘respect’ and ‘enthusiasm’, and they will then use their connections in the media, government, campaign finance, and other means to bring the politician down. So, there are extra-legal means to force what amounts to a defacto mandatory law. Subservience to AIPAC isn’t part of the US Constitution, but it’s part of the ‘underlaw’ that governs this nation. Just like there are lots of information that passes under-the-table and behind-closed-doors, there are certain realities in America that, though officially not the law, function almost as laws. And OBEY AIPAC is one of those unwritten laws of American politics and governance. Likewise, no matter what credentials you have as a journalist, if you’re known for anti-Zionist views, forget about being hired by the mainstream media. You can be as hardline pro-Zionist as you want if you want employment in the media, but if you’re anti-Zionist the chances of you landing a gig in the mainstream media is close to zilch. It’s one of those unwritten laws of American journalism that says you have to suck Jewish dick to get a gig. It’s like how things work in Hollywood. If you want work, you better get on your knees and suck Jewish cock or eat Jewish pussy — or bend over to homos. It’s an ‘underlaw’.

We can’t and shouldn’t force pride on anyone. Whether a German or Turk feels or doesn’t feel pride in regard to his history and heritage should be up to him. We shouldn’t force shame either. In today’s Germany, the collective cult of shame is FORCED on all Germans from kindergarten. Children who know nothing about history are driven into mass frenzy of tears and self-loathing. Though Germans do take pride in certain aspects of German culture, they are mostly made to feel that they are diseased with German-ness and can only really be cured via abolishment of their ethnicity, land, and heritage through massive immigration and blood-mixing.
In Turkey, on the other hand, there are laws that forbid expression of national shame over events such as the Armenian expulsions/massacres or ‘genocide’. Those who express what are deemed to be anti-Turkish views can be fined, imprisoned, and pressured to recant and express pride in being Turkish. Both the German way and Turkish way are wrong for neither allows the freedom of individual conscience that is the true wellspring of any sense of right or wrong, of shame or pride.
Likewise, a society that forces all homos to express pride in homosexuality and pressures all normal-sexuals or true-sexuals to praise homosexuality as something ‘wonderful’ and ‘blessed’ is unfree and wrong. It’s especially wrong because it’s forcing people to believe that 2 + 2 = 5.
In a free society, people shouldn’t even be forced to agree that 2 + 2 = 4. If people in the US want to believe that UFOs have visited farmers in Iowa, Stanley Kubrick faked the moon landings, or some other wacko conspiracy theory, that is their right. 2 + 2 = 4, but if individuals genuinely believe 2 + 2 = 5, they should have the freedom to do so. This is why a free society allows freedom of worship. As far as science and reason know, there is no God or gods. There is only the ‘material’ universe made up of matter, energy, and dimensions. But if people wish to believe in God, Satan, angels, and miracles, that is their right.
But the right to believe that 2 + 2 = 5 doesn’t mean that everyone should be FORCED to believe that 2 + 2 = 5. Sadly, that is very much the case in the US, especially because of the power of utterly corrupt Jewish and homo power.
Jews do control America. It is a fact. It is a 2 + 2 = 4 truth, but we are forced to believe the lie that Jews aren’t particularly powerful or privileged. We are forced believe in the 2 + 2 = 5 lies peddled by the likes of Abe Foxman. We live in a society where Rick Sanchez was fired and blacklisted for noticing Jewish power, where Jason Richwine was fired and blacklisted for noticing higher Jewish IQ, and where Helen Thomas was fired and blacklisted for saying European Jews should go back to Europe. We live in a society where Brendan Eich of Mozilla was fired for believing in true marriage. We live in a society where Christian bakers are sued and driven out of business because they won’t bake ‘gay wedding’ cakes. But a Jewish oligarch like Sheldon Adelson proposes the nuking of Iran — a nation with no nuclear weapons — but is left alone by the media. Adelson gets to play kingmaker in US politics. But we better not notice that Adelson is a dirty Jew Zionist who acts like a gangster. We better not say that Adelson has been protected and enabled by the media that is overwhelmingly Jewish-controlled. And if any goy speaks out, he or she will be targeted, attacked, destroyed, and blacklisted. We live in a world where we are forced to believe that 2 + 2 = 5. And this isn’t happening in a totalitarian society but in a so-called democratic one. But then, while democracy is about people power in principle, the real power is held by those with control over the elite institutions in business, government, legal system, science-technology, education, and mass media. Politicians don’t need everyone’s vote to win. They only need buy up over 50% of the vote, and they have powerful donors behind them, and politicians handpicked by Jewish oligarchs are also favored by the Jewish-run media. Whatever one thinks of Ron Paul, he was snuffed by the Jewish-run media in 2012. Those without power have the power to gripe, but those with the power control the megaphone, and the great majority only hear what comes out of the big mike. Some place their hopes on the internet, but even most of the major sites on the internet are owned and shaped by Liberals. And if anything, most of these ‘alternative’ sites are even more radical in their anti-white-ness than MSM. Also, the biggest Conservative sites and blogs on the Net tend to stick close to so-called ‘mainstream’ politics as defined and dominated by Neocon Jews.

Anyway, in a free society, homos should be allowed to express shame as well as pride in their homosexuality. And if we honestly feel that homosexuality is a shameful act, we should also be free to share and express our views. Homosexuality must not become like the Other Jewishness. Jewishness is so powerfully protected and promoted in the US that we must all bow down before the Jew like the sheepish masses in Cuba and North Korea — last two communist nations — must unconditionally bow down before their ‘supreme leaders’. When the political psychology of a so-called ‘liberal democracy’ begins to resemble cuckoo-bananas communist states, it’s time to look in the mirror to reassess the nature of our social values and political principles.
Christian Baker targeted by vile fruitkin scum enabled by hideous Jews.
