If heterosexuals do not feel insulted by the term 'hetero', why are homosexuals offended by the term 'homo'?

If heterosexuals do not feel insulted by the term 'hetero', why are homosexuals offended by the term 'homo'? Deep down inside, homos are ashamed of the nature of their sexuality and don the 'cultural' mask as 'gays'. That way, people are distracted from the physical nature of homosexuality and made to focus on the social style of homos.
It would be like referring to heteros as 'staid' since their style happens to be less flamboyant than that of homos.
